The Eastern Conference window feels wider than it has in years. With Jayson Tatum and Tyrese Haliburton sidelined by injuries, the last two NBA Finalists from the East might be taking a gap year. This reality has opened the door for other teams, pushing them to be more aggressive in pursuit of a newfound championship window.
One of these teams is the Orlando Magic. The Magic are a promising young team with the duo of Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner and a defensive identity that is on the rise. After a tough first-round loss to the Boston Celtics, it seems that Orlando is ready for the next step, and their President of Basketball Operations, Jeff Weltman, thinks the team has legitimate title aspirations.
Can the Orlando Magic Actually Win the NBA Championship?
While appearing on SiriusXM NBA Radio, Orlando Magic’s Jeff Weltman talked briefly about his team’s chances moving forward and how the team is approaching elevated expectations. Here’s his full quote:
“I know that there’s so much chatter right now because of injuries, about like hey the East is wide open. But like we’re not trying to win the East, we want to win the NBA. And so, I think that it’s really important for us to run our own race. And in doing that, you know, we know what we need, we needed these elements that we talked about.
“We know we’ve needed to get better offensively, hopefully without compromising our defensive identity. There are always gonna be injuries, you just hope they’re not to you. All of those injuries are gonna open up opportunities and so this year because of some of the key players in the East that have gotten injured, that’s become a big part of the conversation.

“But those guys will be back next year, and then it’ll be someone else. It’s always gonna be this year, this year. We just hope that our group together for the next several years can figure out a way to get to the top of the heap.”
Weltman’s statement has a lot to unpack. The first is acknowledging the circumstance. With injuries derailing both the Pacers, there’s an opening in the East. The Milwaukee Bucks are attempting to retool with Myles Turner, but they’re far from a sure thing, even with Giannis Antetokounmpo on the roster.
Magic moved their chips to the middle of the table and traded for Desmond Bane. They sacrificed significant draft capital, Cole Anthony, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope to bring in Bane. Bane offers them some offensive punch that they lacked last season, while still maintaining the defensive ethos that coach Jamahl Mosley has implemented.
How Will the Magic’s Offseason Moves Impact Their Title Chances?
Beyond acquiring Bane, the Magic also signed veteran point guard Tyus Jones to stabilize the rotation, while also re-signing big man Moritz Wagner to a team-friendly deal. In the Draft, they selected Jase Richardson, further adding offensive firepower off the bench.
While Weltman is correct that the team is built for a longer window, it’s also true that the window may never be as open as it is right now. Especially as Banchero and Wagner enter their primes, the time for title contention is now.
With these additions, he’s right to expect title contention. The Magic certainly have enough firepower to contend and should be a force to be reckoned with in the Eastern Conference next season.
