Magic Johnson Compares Braylon Mullins to Stephen Curry After UConn Star’s ‘Clutch’ Dagger vs. Duke

Magic Johnson compared UConn star Braylon Mullins to Stephen Curry after his buzzer-beating dagger took down Duke.

March Madness is already in full swing. Teams across the country have been showing what they are made of. The UConn Huskies are certainly not being left behind. After their latest win on Sunday night, the team caught the attention of none other than former NBA legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson, who had some very kind words to say about them.

Magic Johnson’s Unique Praise for a UConn Huskies Player

After the UConn Huskies defeated the Duke Blue Devils on Sunday night, Johnson had nothing but praise for the team.

“UConn’s victory over Duke in the NCAA Tournament was a classic! UConn came back from a 19-point deficit to win the game 73-72…,” Johnson wrote on X.

The five-time NBA champion also praised Huskies player Braylon Mullins by comparing him to Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry.

“Thanks to Braylon Mullins’s 3-point shot at the buzzer…it reminded me of Steph Curry – so clutch!” Johnson added.

In Sunday’s game against the Blue Devils, Mullins scored just 10 points and grabbed a single rebound in 26 minutes of play. But one moment in that game was impossible to ignore. In the final seconds, he received an assist from Alex Karaban and dropped a three-pointer with 0.4 seconds left. That one shot changed everything.

The comparison with Curry is also understandable. It is because Curry has made so many buzzer-beater plays throughout his career. One well-known example comes from February 2016, in a game between the Warriors and the Oklahoma City Thunder.

With the score tied at 118, Curry caught a pass from Andre Iguodala after a defensive rebound, dribbled upcourt, and launched a deep shot. The ball went straight through the net with 0.6 seconds left on the clock, and the Warriors won 121-118 in overtime. Mullins’ hitting that shot against Duke had a very similar feel.

Now coming back to Sunday’s game, it was not just Mullins who stepped up. Tarris Reed Jr. and Silas Demary Jr. helped the Huskies by scoring 26 and 11 points, respectively.

In fact, the Huskies had a rough start. By halftime, they were trailing by 15 points. But the second half told a different story. The team regrouped, and they scored 44 points in the second half. The Blue Devils struggled to respond, and in the end, UConn completed the comeback, securing a narrow 73-72 victory.

The Huskies will now get ready to face the Illinois Fighting Illini on April 4.
