Luka Dončić Injury Update: How Long Will the Lakers Star Be Out After MRI Results Announced?

Luka Dončić left Thursday's game vs. the Thunder with a left hamstring injury. Here's what we know about his status and timeline.

Luka Dončić’s remarkable run came to an abrupt and painful halt on Thursday night. The Los Angeles Lakers star exited a blowout loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder midway through the third quarter with a left hamstring injury, casting a shadow over LA’s playoff preparations with just five games remaining in the regular season.

How Long Will Luka Dončić Be Out With His Hamstring Injury?

Dončić first appeared to tweak his left hamstring late in the first half against Oklahoma City before aggravating it further midway through the third quarter.

He doubled over in pain, eventually lying down on the baseline before walking gingerly to the locker room under his own power with 7:39 remaining in the period.

The Lakers ruled him out for the rest of the game, and it was announced that Dončić will undergo an MRI scan to assess the severity of the injury.

As of April 3, 2026, the Lakers’ superstar is out indefinitely due to a left hamstring strain. Shams Charania confirmed that the Slovenian guard will miss the remainder of the season, and his return timeline is set without a date for now.

As per ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, Dončić has suffered a Grade 2 hamstring strain. The typical recovery time for such injuries is between 4 and 8 weeks. It’s still a massive blow for the Lakers, who will start the postseason without their superstar.

With the playoffs beginning April 18, the Lakers have very little margin for error. They will be without the scoring leader of the team, and pressure will undoubtedly mount on LeBron James and Austin Reaves.

What makes the situation more alarming is the injury’s history. This is the same left hamstring Dončić dealt with earlier in the season, when he exited a February 5 game against the Philadelphia 76ers and missed several games before returning on February 20.

How the Injury Impacts Dončić’s MVP and All-NBA Chances

Thursday’s setback carried implications far beyond just the final five games. Dončić has played in 64 games this season and needs one more appearance to meet the NBA’s 65-game threshold for end-of-season award eligibility. Without it, he would be ineligible for MVP consideration and the All-NBA ballot entirely. It’s a brutal outcome for a player averaging 33.8 points, 8.3 assists, and 7.8 rebounds per game.

The injury also arrived on arguably the worst possible night for his MVP case. The game against Oklahoma City was viewed as a critical opportunity to make a statement against Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who finished with 28 points, 7 assists, and 7 rebounds, and may have all but solidified his second consecutive MVP award with a dominant performance.

Dončić, by contrast, checked out with 12 points on 3-for-10 shooting, 6 turnovers, and his team down 32 points at the time of his exit.

After Dončić’s historic March, in which he averaged 37.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 7.4 assists while leading LA to a 15-2 record, Thursday was a sharp and painful reversal.

The Lakers, sitting at 50-27 and third in the West, now turn their full attention to getting their franchise player healthy. They would also have to focus on avoiding a playoff exit before he returns. Everything else, including seeding and award races, becomes secondary.
