Luka Dončić has officially put the Los Angeles Lakers on the clock before going away for the summer. Since arriving in Hollywood via a blockbuster trade, the Slovenian superstar has shouldered the burden of revitalizing a historic franchise.
He seamlessly fitted into the Lakers’ rotation, averaging 28.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 7.7 assists in a combined (Mavs and Lakers) 50-game stretch on 45.0% field shooting for the 2024-25 season.

Luka Dončić Pushes Lakers Front Office for Elite Center Support
By the 2025-26 season, the 6-time All-Star had built a partnership with LeBron James and Austin Reaves on the court and helped produce some of the most effective plays. The 27-year-old not only clinched All-NBA First Team honors but also led the league with 33.5 points, 8.3 assists, and 7.7 rebounds per game while shooting 47.6% from the floor and 36.6% from beyond the arc.
Following the 2026 NBA draft, which saw the Wizards, Jazz, Grizzlies, Bulls, and the Clippers clinch the top 5 picks. Front offices across the league are now facing immense pressure to use these resources and rebuild contender teams for the upcoming 2026-27 season.
The Lakers also made headlines by acquiring Cameron Carr as the 24th overall pick in a draft-night trade and successfully re-signing guard Austin Reaves on a 4-year, $185 million max contract. However, draft-night depth alone may not be enough in a competitive Western Conference, where interior defense and physicality play major roles.
Speaking on the latest episode of NBA on ESPN, Senior NBA writer Dave McMenamin revealed what the Slovenian superstar told the Lakers management before going away for the offseason break.
“Source close to him told me what his (Luka Doncic’s) feedback to the Lakers front office … was ‘get me an A-List center. I need that to compete,’ said McMenamin. “Luka’s camp was also told when they were traded from Dallas to LA a year and a half ago, it’s the summer of 2026.”
“Wait until the summer of 2026, then we’re going to show you what we mean for the future and your future as the face of the franchise…But there’s so much work to be done with this roster,” he added.

Luka Dončić’s demand leaves no room for misinterpretation. After a 53-29 regular season, they were exposed by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the conference semifinals. OKC swept the 17-time NBA champs 4-0 with ease, even with their own injury struggles.
The Lakers need to find a premier big man who can dominate the paint, anchor the defense, and support the 27-year-old superstar in a highly competitive West.
Whether through aggressive trades or hitting the open market, the purple and gold must find and deliver the final piece of the puzzle to turn this roster into a championship contender.
