One of the biggest dominoes of the NBA offseason has officially fallen. Thanks to the surprise nature of the trade, Luka Dončić remaining with the Los Angeles Lakers beyond his current contract was a major question mark. However, in a move clearly signalling his belief in the franchise, the Slovenian superstar signed a blockbuster extension to stay in L.A.
Almost immediately, it secures the future for the Lakers while giving them clear agency to start building a legitimate contender around one of the best players in the sport. However, for a young phenom like Dončić, who began his career as a teenager, it is a continuation of the legendary trajectory he’s currently on.

What Is Luka Dončić’s Contract?
Back in 2021, the five-time All-NBA selection signed a five-year contract with the Dallas Mavericks worth $207 million. However, as we all know, his tenure with the Mavericks came to a shocking conclusion thanks to the trade with Los Angeles.
With two years still left on the deal, Dončić could have decided to make his decision some time in the future. Instead, he cemented his loyalty to his new team with a record contract extension to keep him a member of the Lakers for the majority of his 20s.
Senior NBA insider for The Athletic and Stadium, Shams Charania, broke the news on X, writing, “BREAKING: Los Angeles Lakers All-NBA star Luka Doncic has signed a three-year, $165 million maximum contract extension with the franchise, with a player option in 2028, agent Bill Duffy of WME Basketball told ESPN.”

But, he wasn’t the only one to confirm the news, as the former scoring champion himself had a message for the Lakers faithful, confirming his allegiance to the city and organization. Alongside the contract update, he had a heartfelt message about his mission with the team.
I just signed my extension with the Lakers. Excited to keep working to bring championships to LA and make Laker Nation proud. Grateful to the Lakers, my teammates and all the fans who’ve shown so much love since day one. This is just the beginning. 💜💛 pic.twitter.com/PrTfTxxlpU

“I just signed my extension with the Lakers,” Dončić wrote. “Excited to keep working to bring championships to LA and make Laker Nation proud. Grateful to the Lakers, my teammates, and all the fans who’ve shown so much love since day one. This is just the beginning.”
For fans of the storied franchise, this has to be music to their ears. A relatively quiet offseason could now go into fifth gear as Rob Pelinka tries to build a championship contender around his two superstars. It also gives the Lakers security for the future, as LeBron James nears retirement on the other side of 40.
What is Luka Dončić’s Net Worth?
While still a teenager, Dončić was dominating grown men in the premier basketball league across Europe as a member of Real Madrid. His talent on the hardwood eventually landed him as a top-five pick in the NBA.
Since coming into the league, he’s lived up to his billing and then some. Making Dallas into an overnight contender, he led them to the playoffs virtually every season, while also leading them to one Conference Finals and a Finals appearance in relatively short order.
During that time, he also amassed a small fortune from the franchise. Thanks to his rookie deal and the massive extension he signed in 2021, he’s already earned a lot of money thanks to his salary as an NBA superstar.

However, his popularity, both as one of the faces of the league and internationally, has also made him a magnet for major brand endorsements. The likes of Nike, Jordan, NBA 2K, Pannini, and BioSteel have all contributed towards his earnings.
Forbes estimates that he’s earned over $15 million through those endorsements, bringing his total net worth up to $75 million following his extension.
What Are Luka Dončić’s Career Earnings?
A top-five pick in the draft, he signed the standard rookie contract worth $32.5 million over a period of four years. In that timeframe, he earned the Rookie of the Year honors while making three consecutive All-NBA First Teams and All-Star appearances.
His run of dominance led to the massive extension with Dallas, worth five years and $215 million. A scoring champion and a proven playoff killer, his status as one of the best players in the world isn’t up for debate.
Through the first seven years of his career, he’s been adequately compensated for his performances as well, earning a total of $166 million. Over the next two years, he’s slated to add close to a hundred million to that total, before his new extension even kicks in.
Near the end of his new deal with Los Angeles, Dončić should have career earnings near the $400 million mark.
