‘Lord Have Mercy,’ ‘Miles Better Than You’ — NBA World Flames Draymond Green for Blunt On-Air Dig at Charles Barkley

Draymond Green draws widespread backlash for disrespecting NBA legend Charles Barkley on ESPN's playoff broadcast.

Draymond Green filled in for Shaquille O’Neal during Wednesday night’s ESPN NBA playoff broadcast, with tensions rising between the Golden State Warriors star and Charles Barkley.

After Barkley’s blunt assessment of the Warriors’ outlook, Green took a jab at the NBA legend’s late-career stint with the Houston Rockets, drawing widespread backlash.

NBA World Slams Draymond Green for Disrespecting Charles Barkley

Green’s Warriors were the class of the league in the latter half of the 2010s and made a resurgence in the early 2020s, winning four total championships and making six NBA Finals appearances.

However, with an aging core, major injuries, and limited depth around superstar guard Stephen Curry, they have now missed the playoffs twice in the last three years, finishing just 37-45 this season.

Barkley called attention to Golden State’s increasingly dire situation on Wednesday, noting that such a decline is par for the course for any dynasty.

“It’s over for the Warriors,” Barkley began. “No disrespect. It ends for every old team. You have your run, you get old, y’all let Klay [Thompson] go. You and Steph are on the back side of y’all careers. It just passed you by. Y’all had one of the greatest runs ever.”

The Hall of Famer’s comments seemingly ruffled Green’s feathers, as he later seized an opportunity to diss Barkley’s Rockets tenure.

“I think the goal is just to not look like you in the Houston Rockets uniform,” Green said, with Barkley simply responding, “Yeah.”

The 2017 Defensive Player of the Year later defended the Warriors’ importance to the league despite their waning win totals.

“As you get older, I think you need to redefine what’s success,” Green added. “Still the most sellouts in the NBA, still the most national TV games in the NBA, and you just wanna give yourself a chance. Success may not be for us, at this point, a championship.”

Green’s retort didn’t sit well with the NBA world, as the four-time All-Star caught major flak on X for disrespecting an all-time great face-to-face. Many also pointed out that Barkley’s Rockets stats exceeded Green’s peak production.

Across four campaigns in Houston, Barkley averaged 16.5 points and 12.2 rebounds per game, both exceeding Green’s single-season career-high marks.

“Barkley was better in Houston than Draymond ever was. This was just rude and didn’t seem to land well with the panel,” Kentucky Sports Radio’s Matt Jones asserted.

“Uh, Barkley looked better at age 35 than Draymond just did, that’s for damn sure,” self-described NBA strategist Jim Park declared.

“Draymond talking to Barkley like he’s anywhere near his level just bothered me. Change your tone, bro, he’s miles better than you,” fan account @TheWestbrookEra implored Green.

“Draymond really thinks he’s on Barkley’s level. Lord have mercy,” another user reacted in disbelief.

“Draymond just said he doesn’t want to ever look like what Barkley was in a Rockets uniform to his face. That diss falls flat cause Draymond Green has never been in the same stratosphere of Charles Barkley as a player,” radio and television talent Henry Lake blasted Green.

“Aside from the fact that this is awful, awkward television, it’s also just ahistorical. In his 4 years in Houston, Chuck averaged 16-12-4, including averaging 18 & 12 during a run to the Western Conference finals. Draymond continues to recreate history,” FS1’s Nick Wright opined.

Green is no stranger to facing pushback for his outspokenness, often taking heat for his limited offensive contributions to Golden State’s dynasty.

Still, the 36-year-old played a vital role as the defensive backbone of the Warriors’ four title teams, while Barkley famously retired ringless, giving Green some bragging rights over the 1993 MVP.
