Bam Adebayo did the unthinkable during the Miami Heat’s 150-129 home victory over the Washington Wizards on Tuesday.
The star big man surpassed Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant’s storied 81-point game to record the highest-scoring performance in the NBA’s modern era, with a whopping 83 points. His remarkable and unlikely outburst left the NBA world, including several premier stars, in disbelief.
Bam Adebayo’s Historic 83-Point Eruption Shocks the NBA World
Adebayo entered what appeared to be a relatively uninspiring regular-season contest against the lowly Wizards with a career-high of 41 points and a season-high of 32 points.
However, the three-time All-Star quickly demolished those numbers, reaching 31 points by the end of the first quarter, 43 points at halftime, and 62 points entering the fourth quarter en route to numerous records.
This set the stage for the Heat to help Adebayo relentlessly pursue Bryant’s 81-point mark in the final frame. The team even engaged in questionable tactics down the stretch, including intentionally fouling and challenging a call in the blowout to get extra possessions and scoring opportunities.
On top of his 83 points, Adebayo finished with 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks, shooting 20-for-43 from the field (46.5%), 7-for-22 from 3-point range (31.8%), and a staggering 36-for-43 at the free-throw line (83.7%).
In doing so, the nine-year veteran set an NBA record for the most free throws made and attempted in a game. While not the most efficient night overall, Adebayo delivered an unforgettable offensive spectacle, second only to league icon Wilt Chamberlain’s legendary 100-point outing way back in 1962, garnering widespread adoration.

Meanwhile, some analysts began quipping about how improbable Adebayo’s scoring of the second-most points in NBA history was.
“83 points on 43 shots and 43 free throws is an objectively hilarious stat line. Never in a million years would’ve picked Bam Adebayo to hold the No. 2 scoring game in NBA history,” Phoenix Suns reporter Gerald Bourguet joked.
“Bam just broke Kobe’s 81-point record. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 I can’t believe this,” Memphis Grizzlies reporter Damichael Cole said in awe.
“How many guesses would it have taken for you to get to Bam?” Denver Nuggets reporter Bennett Durando asked.
Regardless of his scoring method and the quality of his opponent, Adebayo etched his name in the history books as Miami (37-29) seized its sixth straight victory in emphatic fashion.
