‘Haven’t Seen LeBron This Pissed Off in a While’ — NBA World Blasts ‘ATROCIOUS’ Officiating in Lakers-Thunder Game 2

The NBA world erupted on Thursday night, blasting the officiating and OKC's flopping during the Thunder's Game 2 win over the Lakers.

The Oklahoma City Thunder took a 2-0 stranglehold on their Western Conference semifinal series against the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday night, pulling off a 125-107 win at Paycom Center. The officiating dominated the conversation from the opening minutes through the final whistle. At one point, even the broadcasting crew was questioning calls.

By the time the buzzer sounded, social media had turned into a coordinated takedown of the whistles. LeBron James and Austin Reaves were fuming and confronted the refs, while NBA analysts and influencers erupted with strong reactions online.

NBA World Reacts to Controversial Calls in Lakers- Thunder Game 2

Tensions boiled over in the first quarter with just 4:06 left on the clock, as Chet Holmgren went down clutching his face after a Deandre Ayton shove that didn’t appear to come anywhere close to his head.

Officials initially called a foul on Ayton, with Stan Van Gundy called it “a big-time acting job” on the broadcast. Van Gundy pushed for the league to stop rewarding the behavior.

“We need to get rid of the flops, and the way to do it is to not give guys calls,” he said.

Lakers head coach JJ Redick came forward and challenged the call, and after a lengthy review, the decision was overturned to a defensive foul on Holmgren. There were plenty of controversial calls throughout the night, prompting some strong reactions online.

Carson Breber of Volume Sports summed up the strange calls: “Rough night for the officials both ways. That should’ve been continuation for LeBron. Not calling the take foul was absurd. Caruso charge was silly. Flagrant on Shai was ridiculous. Ayton did not goaltend. So many moments that just have not made sense.”

NFL legend Shannon Sharpe kept it short on X: “All that damn flopping.”

The account Hater Report didn’t bother with subtlety: “The OKC Thunder must take flopping acting classes between every game. THIS IS SHAMELESS. Even the 7 footers doing it man.”

Legendary rapper Lil Wayne expressed his frustration as a Lakers fan.

“OKC games are unwatchable. The refs are even dressed in their colors tn! Brazy,” he wrote.

The account Lakers All Day Everyday focused on the four-time MVP, and how tense he looked as he tried to reason with a referee.

“I haven’t seen LeBron this pissed off in a while,” they wrote. “These refs are ATROCIOUS…”

The same handle followed up by going at Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s influence: “Shai has rubbed off on his teammates in the worst way possible. This is ridiculous.”

Legion Hoops piled on: “These referees are absolutely screwing the Lakers. They’re so biased towards Oklahoma City. Tough to watch.”

Lakers writer Anthony Irwin didn’t mince words either.

“This is one of the most poorly officiated games I’ve ever seen,” he wrote.

Even as the game ended, the Lakers’ frustration was just getting started. Austin Reaves, James, and several other Lakers were spotted having words with officials as they walked off the floor following Game 2.

While officiating dominated the chatter, OKC got a huge win in Game 2. OKC turned 19 Lakers turnovers into 26 points. The Thunder bench outscored the Lakers’ reserves 48-18, led by 18 points from Jared McCain and 12 from Cason Wallace.

Ajay Mitchell added 20 points, with 22 points from Holmgren, who also added 9 rebounds and 4 steals, with a +19. Gilgeous-Alexander chipped in 22 points of his own despite picking up four fouls and sitting out most of the third quarter.

The Thunder are now 6-0 this postseason, and four of those wins have come without star Jalen Williams, who is sidelined by a left hamstring strain suffered in Game 2 of the first round against Phoenix. Mitchell has averaged 18.7 points across the last four games since stepping into the starting lineup.

Reaves responded to his critics with the best playoff game of his career, contributing 31 points and 6 assists. James added 23 points, 6 assists, and 3 steals on 9-of-18 shooting. Rui Hachimura had 16 points and shot 4-of-7 from three. Marcus Smart added 14.

Luka Dončić remained out with the Grade 2 left hamstring strain that he suffered on April 2. He recently revealed that he was given an eight-week recovery timeline at the time of the injury, meaning he still has a ways to go in his recovery and he may not play in this series at all.

Game 3 tips off Saturday at 8:30 PM ET in Los Angeles.
