At this point, it feels inconsequential to repeat it. But the success LeBron James has achieved this deep into his career is unfathomable. Twenty-three years into his career, at 41, he is soldiering on with All-Star-level play for the Los Angeles Lakers.
Unfortunately, the deck has been stacked against him significantly in the last week. With his two best teammates getting hurt simultaneously, the onus has fallen on James to carry the team. He has done an admirable job so far, even as Father Time looms in the background.

LeBron James Explains the Secret Behind His Prolonged NBA Success
It seemed like everything was coming up for the Lakers going into that game against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Going 15 of 17 till then, the team was fitting together seamlessly. The defense had taken a step up, Luka Dončić was playing his best basketball and making a push for MVP, and James had stepped into the perfect Swiss Army Knife role.
Then, it all came crashing down within a span of two hours.
As Los Angeles was routed by the Thunder, Dončić suffered a Grade 2 hamstring strain, while Austin Reaves suffered an oblique injury. Now, both players are questionable to return early in the playoffs, which could effectively end the Lakers’ season.
In their absence, James has gone back to his more traditional, ball-dominant style. And it has worked out relatively well. In the three games he’s played, they have gone 2-1, but even more impressively, the four-time NBA champion has been individually dominant.
After another dominant showing to close out two victories on a back-to-back, reporters caught up with him in the locker room. Understandably in awe of his performance over the last week, reporters asked the four-time MVP about the level he’s been able to sustain.
“It starts way before you get on the floor. They see us once the game is going, the popcorn’s been popped, and the lights are brighter,” James said before detailing his personal experience at trying to maintain his consistency.
“It takes so much more like sacrifice and discipline and things over the course if you want to be really great at this and if you want to do it for a long period of time. It’s so many hours that you got to commit to it.”
Lebron on what it takes to play for as long as he has at a high level that the average fan may not understand:

Beyond just the attention toward the game, he also revealed the harshness of making that commitment. “There’s so many things that you maybe want to do that you can’t, if you want to be great.”
As a prodigy who came into the league as the first overall pick straight from high school with all the world’s expectations on his shoulders, James has always had a unique path. And the guy with the most points in NBA history recognizes that uniqueness.
However, his rationale remains the same for everyone overall. “But everybody’s journey is different. I’m just speaking from my journey, but I do think that the game gives back to the ones who put the time in and commit to the game. That’s just the Game Gods rewarding if we don’t cheat the process.”
Even with his significance to close out the regular season, the weight is once again absurd on James’ shoulders. Averaging 28 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 12.7 assists per game in his last three outings, he’s been a one-man wrecking crew for the Lakers as they try to stay alive in the race for the three-seed.
This deep into his career, as his role on the team has continued to shift, James has been ready for seemingly every challenge.
Even if Dončić can make a return, it would come later in the playoffs. As a result, the King is going to have to put the team on his back and keep them afloat in the postseason against a potentially dangerous first-round matchup.
