The future of LeBron James became considerably murkier after the explosive ESPN article last month that shed light on Los Angeles Lakers owner Jeanie Buss, her shaky relationship with the star, and her apparent willingness to move on from James.
With James playing in his 23rd season, the 41-year-old face of the NBA and 4x MVP is in the twilight of his storied career. The question is: will he be moved by the deadline, or finish his career in pastures new this summer if he chooses to play another season?
James has remained coy about his retirement plans, but an NBA insider has provided clarity on his immediate future as the trade deadline approaches.
LeBron James’ Immediate Future With The Lakers Clarified By NBA Insider
According to ESPN’s NBA insider Dave McMenamin, in his most recent article, he has provided major news about James’ future. He reveals:
“With the NBA trade deadline approaching and several teams considered to be potential future destinations for LeBron James reportedly involved in talks to acquire star-level talent, James is still expected to finish out the season with the Los Angeles Lakers, league sources told ESPN on Tuesday.”

His future was also clarified by his agent, Rich Paul, on his “Game Over” podcast, in which Paul said James would not seek a trade. Furthermore, he has a full no-trade clause; he would have to approve any deals brought to him.
However, keep an eye out for next summer. McMenamin writes that the New York Knicks, Golden State Warriors, and a homecoming to the Cleveland Cavaliers would be seen as appealing destinations next season.
James spoke glowingly of Knicks fans and Madison Square Garden last week, and his affinity for his hometown team, the Cavs, with whom he won a title in 2016, is also no secret. That is, if he chooses to play one more year, and that is still a major ‘if.’
Nevertheless, James’ relationship with the Lakers is almost certainly going to reach a mutual end this summer. According to insider Jake Fischer, it’s definitive: “The Lakers are ready to move on from LeBron James, and I think LeBron James is ready to move on from the Lakers as well.”
This is unsurprising given Baxter Holmes’ explosive ESPN article detailing family infighting, similar to the show “Succession,” over control of the Lakers, as well as the strain between ownership and James to the point that Buss considered trading James in the past.
Still, don’t expect anything to happen by Thursday; despite many dominoes falling across the league as teams go big-game hunting at this dramatic trade deadline, do not expect James to be one of the stars moved.
