LeBron James Drops the Biggest Hint About His Retirement Plans Amid NBA Free Agency Rumors

NBA legend LeBron James may have dropped a major hint about his retirement and if he may play beyond next season.

Once again, the future of LeBron James is at the epicenter of the NBA. We know the King will return to the court next year.

We know that he will not be playing for the Los Angeles Lakers and instead will be returning to the Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers, or joining the Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves, or Philadelphia 76ers. The Cavaliers are considered the favorite, but no team seems truly out of it, with one team “determined” to sign James.

LeBron James Drops Hints About Retirement

What we don’t know is just how long James plans to play, and that remains the key question.

James took questions from the audience at the Fanatics Fest in New York City. A young boy named Elon asked him about free agency and his future.

Before answering, James complimented the boy, praising his question and saying the media could learn a thing or two from the 11-year-old.

“Obviously, it’s a big decision,” James said. “This is the third time in my career that I’ve been a free agent – I think three – yeah. It’s a big decision for not only myself, but for my family as well.”

James then gave a pause.

“Just for the last part of my career, where I want to spend the last few years or last year or last two years of my NBA career,” James said. “Wherever I go Elon, I will make my staple. I’m a natural born leader. I’m going to try to fit in to whatever team I’m going into, but also give them all the tools and all the knowledge that I’ve been able to grasp over the last 23 years. I know the game. I know the ins and outs of basketball.”

Obviously, all the talk has turned to where James will be playing next season, but the rumors about how long he will continue playing, which dominated the discussion around James just a few months ago, have been nearly nonexistent.

Part of the reason was that many assumed James would play only one more season.

At 41, James has obviously taken a step back, but he still had an excellent season. After overcoming some early injury troubles, James played in 60 games, averaging 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, 6.1 rebounds, and 1.2 steals in 33.2 minutes per game while still shooting 51.5% from the field.

James also raised his play in the postseason, putting up 23.2 points, 7.3 assists, 6.7 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game, leading the Lakers to a first-round series victory over the Houston Rockets before being swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder.

James took a step back and let Luka Dončić, and at times Austin Reaves, lead the Lakers, and James has said he is willing to take a back seat to his next team’s star.

It will be interesting to see where James winds up, but what makes his free agency even more intriguing is that he may be playing there for more than one season.
