11-Year NBA Veteran Makes Bold Prediction About LeBron James’ Future With Lakers

NBA veteran predicts LeBron James could leave the Lakers to finish his career with another team, probably bringing Bronny James with him.

Speculation surrounding LeBron James’ future and final season resurfaced this week. Former NBA forward Charlie Villanueva delivered a striking prediction about how the four-time champion’s career might end.

Charlie Villanueva Says LeBron James Will End His Career With Cavaliers

Speaking in a video shared by Joebuddenclips on X, Villanueva suggested that James could leave the Los Angeles Lakers to return to the Cleveland Cavaliers for a farewell run, potentially bringing his son, Bronny James, with him and positioning himself for ownership equity after retirement.

“LeBron’s going to leave L.A., get whatever they can afford him, whatever, minimum vet, whatever it is, get his five, five to ten mil a year,” Villanueva said. “Take Bronny with him. Finishes last year in Cleveland, doing a farewell tour, and get a piece of equity on the back end when he retires of the Cleveland Cavaliers, which is worth way more than what we’re talking about.”

While Villanueva’s comments are speculative, they touch on several realities currently surrounding James’ situation in Los Angeles.

James, now 41 years old, is in his 23rd NBA season and opted into his $52.6 million player option last summer to remain with the Lakers.

He is playing on a two-year, $101.3 million contract that runs through the 2025-26 season, after which he is set to become a free agent. Notably, the Lakers have not offered him an extension, fueling ongoing discussion about what comes next.

Retirement talk has followed James for years, and he has acknowledged that the timeline is tightening. Back in Sep. 2025, the league’s all-time leading scorer admitted the end may be closer than many expect.

“I don’t know when the end is,” James said, “but I know it’s a lot sooner than later.”

That said, a return to Cleveland would carry heavy symbolism. James spent 11 seasons with the Cavaliers across two stints, first from 2003 to 2010 and later from 2014 to 2018. Drafted first overall in the legendary 2003 NBA Draft, he delivered the franchise’s first-ever championship in 2016, cementing his legacy in Northeast Ohio.

The idea of James finishing his career with the Cavaliers has been echoed by others around the league.

CBS Sports writer Sam Quinn previously suggested Cleveland is the only team that could offer James the kind of ending befitting his career if the Lakers choose a different direction. DeMarcus Cousins made a similar prediction on Run It Back, saying:

“Do I feel like he finishes his career in LA? I don’t. My gut tells me he finishes in Cleveland… That’s where his story starts, obviously, that’s where he is from. I think that will be the first team to hang his jersey up, so it just makes sense.”

Last summer, photos of James training at the Cavaliers’ facility further fueled rumors, though he later downplayed the speculation, reiterating his ties to Cleveland as home rather than hinting at a return.

For now, there is no indication from James’ camp that a reunion is imminent. His focus remains on chasing a fifth NBA title with the Lakers. Despite missing 14 games earlier this season, he is still averaging 22.5 points, 7 assists, and 6 rebounds across 25 appearances.
