Lakers Insider Reveals Major Reason Why a LeBron James Trade Request Is Unlikely Despite Rich Paul’s Comments

Despite Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James opting into his contact, a trade appears unlikely.

Before free agency began on Monday evening, we received some interesting news regarding one of the greatest players of all time.

Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James decided to opt into his $52.6 million player option with the Los Angeles Lakers. James has been signing two-year deals with player options in order to keep his options open. However, some thought James may opt to take a longer deal now that he is teammates with superstar guard Luka Dončić.

However, James opting in wasn’t a big surprise – it was the reactions to his opt-in afterwards, specifically from Rich Paul, that caught many off guard.

LeBron James Not Expected to Be on the Move?

ESPN’s Shams Charania’s reaction led to speculation that James could be on the move.

“LeBron James is 40 years old,” Charania said. “He’s going to be 41 years old in December. He knows whether it’s one season left, two seasons left, his time in the NBA is nearing its end, and obviously, as Rich Paul made clear… They are prioritizing trying to compete in a realistic way to win a championship… He wants to end his career on his terms.”

Could that mean another return to Cleveland to join a very talented Cavaliers team? Or perhaps teaming back up with Kyrie Irving in Dallas?

“The Lakers are moving younger. They’re looking to the future and prioritizing Luka Dončić, really as they should,” Charania added. “From what I gather, LeBron James understands where the Lakers are. I don’t think he’s asking them to change direction or make him the face of the franchise again. He wants to finish his career playing at the highest level, whether that’s in Los Angeles or somewhere else.”

According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, that does not appear to be the case.

“As I was told from a source close to Lebron James, when there’s $50M on the table, you take it,” McMenamin explained. “That was part of the motivating factor. I think if this was the final outcome here was Lebron going elsewhere, this would have been put in motion far earlier than yesterday.”

Although McMenamin agrees that Paul’s comments were odd, he doesn’t believe the timing sets up to make a move.

“The timing of the statement makes it more complicated if that was to occur (James requesting a trade),” McMenamin said. “It doesn’t mean that if LeBron James hit the open market, that some other team would try to find a package that would entice the Lakers to trade him there. Obviously, LeBron has a no-trade clause, so he’d have to approve the team he’s going to.

“I think if this was the final outcome, here was LeBron going elsewhere, this would have put in motion far earlier than yesterday with this statement.”

McMenamin’s explanation makes sense. Teams have already made plenty of moves this offseason and have worked on trades and re-shuffling of their rosters to make signings prior to the opening of free agency. Therefore, James’s request for a trade this late in the game would severely limit his options.

As exciting as it would be to see James traded for the first time in his career, it doesn’t seem likely to happen.
