Lakers HC JJ Redick Sets Record Straight on Heated Confrontation With Luka Dončić: ‘I Don’t Know Why It Went Viral’

JJ Redick reacts after his tense exchange with Lakers superstar Luka Dončić in Saturday's win vs. the Warriors went viral.

Luka Dončić and the Los Angeles Lakers’ weekend success was clouded by a viral clip of the superstar guard engaging in a heated confrontation with coach JJ Redick during Saturday’s 129-101 road victory over the Golden State Warriors.

While the moment sparked concern among Lakers fans and prompted the media to ponder its ramifications, on Tuesday, Redick expressed confusion over the prevailing discourse.

JJ Redick Questions Backlash to ‘Normal’ Disagreement With Luka Dončić

The interaction that dominated new headlines saw Redick attempt to dap up Dončić as he subbed out of Saturday’s game. The six-time All-Star appeared uninterested as he walked to the bench, leading Redick to trail him as he took a seat.

After exchanging words, Dončić extended his hand to Redick, who opted to leave him be. The 2024 NBA scoring champion reacted by popping off the bench and shouting at the second-year coach, with his teammate Jarred Vanderbilt intervening to calm him down.

While analysts and former players raised concerns about the team’s “body language” and overall lack of “championship energy,” Redick didn’t give the moment a second thought until forced to comment.

“I didn’t think much of it at the time, to be honest with you. I don’t think Luka did either,” Redick said before Tuesday’s home matchup against the New Orleans Pelicans.

“He and I have a great relationship. I really value our relationship. I think those things happen, not every game, but they happen frequently, and sometimes you have to rehash them with a player.

“As a teammate, sometimes it happens player to player. It’s a competition, and there’s two guys who are, in this case, trying to win a basketball game and be on the same page about stuff.”

On top of chalking up the disagreement to competitive spirit, Redick added that he welcomes such open dialogue with his players.

“Frankly, I talk about player-led teams all the time. I encourage guys talking to me, or talking to our coaches and bringing stuff up and telling us what they need,” Redick shared. “I don’t know why it went viral; it felt very normal to me.”

Despite the unwanted storyline, the Lakers (36-24) entered Tuesday riding a two-game winning streak, with both victories coming by 24-plus points. This comes after a stretch in which the aspiring Western Conference contender lost five games in seven appearances.

As such, Redick’s tense exchange with his top player doesn’t appear to be affecting LA’s on-court production, at least not thus far.
