The Dallas Mavericks are going through a summer of upheaval with newly appointed basketball executive Masai Ujiri wielding the axe on head coach Jason Kidd. Now, the future of Kyrie Irving has also been called into question, with one insider claiming that multiple contenders are monitoring the situation surrounding the guard’s future.

NBA Insider Claims Multiple Teams Are Eyeing Kyrie Irving
As Ujiri looks to rebuild the Mavericks roster around Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg, the future of Irving could become uncertain in the coming months.
NBA insider Shams Charania revealed on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Wednesday that multiple NBA teams are keeping tabs on how the situation surrounding the 6-foot-2 guard’s future develops in the coming weeks and months.
“Irving is a generational player. Masai Ujiri did his press conference today and said he wants to see Irving and Cooper Flagg on the court together. But there’s no question, there’s multiple contenders around the NBA that are very much monitoring what Irving’s future is with the Mavericks, whether it’s this summer or into the season,” Charania said.
Charania further claimed that Mavs owner Patrick Dumont has been removing many key personnel from the Mark Cuban era since taking over in 2023. Dumont was also a key decision-maker in the decision to trade Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers.
“We’ve seen Patrick Dumont, the owner, essentially flush away anyone that was even around the Mark Cuban regime. Nico Harrison, Jason Kidd, they were all brought in by Cuban. Luka Dončić [was] a Mark Cuban guy. The only Cuban guy left on that time right now is Kyrie Irving,” he added.

Irving joined the Mavericks in 2023 and helped them make the NBA Finals a year later. A month after the blockbuster Dončić trade, he tore his ACL and hasn’t played since. He is eyeing a return to action in time for the start of the 2026/27 season.

The 34-year-old signed a three-year, $119 million contract extension with the Mavericks in July 2025, which includes a player option for the final year.
Irving is undoubtedly one of the elite scorers in the NBA. However, it remains to be seen whether he can maintain that level after spending more than a year on the sidelines. So Ujiri could have his work cut out for him if he decides to explore the possibility of trading Irving.
