Kings Free Agency Rumors: Sacramento Pursuing 22-Year-Old NBA Champion

Sacramento’s pursuit of Jonathan Kuminga could reshape the Kings’ roster, with Malik Monk’s trade value at the center of ongoing talks with the Warriors and Pistons

The Sacramento Kings are pushing hard to reshape their roster this summer, and their top target is Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga. With Dennis Schröder set to join Sacramento on a three-year, $45 million deal, the Kings are also shopping Malik Monk, whose name has come up in nearly every trade rumor.

The front office is looking to strike a balance between adding talent and clearing up a crowded backcourt, as they remain engaged in talks with the Warriors and Detroit Pistons over a potential three-team deal. If successful, this move would not only bring in Kuminga and Schröder but also help Sacramento address its roster depth issues.

Sacramento’s Pursuit of Jonathan Kuminga Signals Roster Shift

Following a quiet start to free agency, the Kings have turned their attention to the trade market. They have already added Schröder, Dario Šarić, and Drew Eubanks, but their focus has shifted toward acquiring a dynamic wing.

Kuminga, the No. 7 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, has emerged as a top target for the franchise. According to NBC Sports California, Sacramento, Golden State, and Detroit are discussing a three-team trade. In the proposed deal, Sacramento would land Kuminga and Schröder, while Monk would be sent to Detroit. The Warriors would receive Šarić, second-year guard Devin Carter, and two second-round picks from the Kings.

Kuminga, who was selected by the Warriors for his athletic upside, never fully fit into Steve Kerr’s system. In 2023-24, the 6’6” forward averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game on 45.4% shooting from the field. While his three-point shooting remains inconsistent at 30.5%, he is considered a high-upside slasher with two-way potential.

Kuminga became a restricted free agent after Golden State extended a $7.9 million qualifying offer. The team did not reach a contract extension with him prior to the 2024-25 season.

Sacramento believes Kuminga’s fit alongside Domantas Sabonis could unlock his strengths. Paired with Keegan Murray and Zach LaVine on the perimeter, Kuminga could thrive in a fast-paced system focused on transition play and cutting.

Meanwhile, the Kings’ pursuit of Kuminga highlights their desire for roster flexibility and defensive versatility. The team’s offseason strategy has become increasingly trade-focused, and the front office is willing to make bold moves to address its needs.

Malik Monk’s Trade Value Remains Unclear as Kings Search for Balance

Monk has been involved in nearly every rumored deal Sacramento has considered this offseason. Despite averaging 17.2 points and 5.6 assists on 43.9% shooting, his limited efficiency from three-point range (32.5%) and positional overlap have made him a likely trade piece. Jake Fischer of The Stein Line reported that Monk could be the most likely non-free-agent player to be traded this summer.

“If you want to look for just any potential trade target who could be moved, who has a likelihood of being moved, I would definitely throw Malik Monk on that board.”

Monk’s $18.8 million salary for next season complicates matters, as it slightly exceeds the $14.1 million mid-level exception, making it harder to match contracts under the new cap restrictions.

Sacramento has a glut of shooting guards, with Monk, DeMar DeRozan, LaVine, Keon Ellis, Carter, and Nique Clifford all under contract. The front office’s priority has clearly shifted toward rebalancing the roster, with an emphasis on adding size and defensive versatility.

While Detroit was reportedly interested in Monk as part of the Schröder sign-and-trade, no agreement has been finalized. Meanwhile, Golden State’s interest remains tepid, given the team’s existing depth at the two-guard spot with Brandin Podziemski, Buddy Hield, and Moses Moody already in place.
