As the NBA offseason heats up, Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga finds himself in the middle of trade and free agency rumors. Despite multiple reports linking him to potential moves, including strong interest from the Sacramento Kings, there is growing clarity that no deal is imminent.
The young forward’s future remains uncertain, while the Warriors and Kings continue to explore options and weigh their next steps. This ongoing saga highlights the league’s fast-paced roster dynamics and the value teams place on rising talent.
Kings Show Interest in Kuminga, but Deal Unlikely
Sacramento has emerged as one of the most active teams pursuing Kuminga, according to ABC 10’s Matt George. The Kings, who have reportedly been exploring multiple roster reshuffles, were said to be “very engaged” in acquiring the 21-year-old forward via sign-and-trade. Despite their openness to moving Malik Monk in other contexts, Monk is not believed to be a part of any proposed package for Kuminga.
George notes that a combination of Devin Carter, Dario Šarić, and draft picks has been floated to match salaries and provide value, potentially in conjunction with Sacramento’s rumored Šarić-for-Jonas Valančiūnas deal with Denver. The idea would be to create enough financial flexibility to offer Kuminga a sizable contract.
However, The Athletic’s Anthony Slater reports that talks remain exploratory.
There’s nothing near the finish line on the Jonathan Kuminga front as the third night of free agency wraps, per sources. Conversations ongoing with Warriors and several teams on periphery. Warriors also waiting on Al Horford decision.

Meanwhile, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst revealed that Golden State has been aggressively pursuing Al Horford. Despite the Lakers signing Deandre Ayton, Windhorst pointed out that the Lakers are still contenders for Horford because of their available $5.1 million bi-annual exception.
With the situation still developing, the focus now turns to Kuminga’s journey so far in the NBA.
A Look Into Kuminga’s NBA Journey So Far
Kuminga’s NBA journey began with promise. In 2020, he joined the NBA G League Ignite, where he averaged 15.8 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game.

The Warriors selected him with the 7th pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. After signing with the team in August, Kuminga made his debut that October. He steadily gained confidence, dropping a then career-high 26 points in his first start in December 2021 and participating in the 2022 Rising Stars Challenge. He capped off his rookie year as an NBA champion, becoming the second-youngest player ever to win a title.
In 2024, Kuminga’s development continued. He tied a Warriors franchise record by making 11 straight field goals in a January win over the Hawks and scored a career-best 34 points twice in back-to-back games. A sprained ankle sidelined him for 31 games, but he returned strong with 18 points in limited minutes against Sacramento.
