Did Kevin Durant’s Cryptic Post Just Confirm His Interest in Joining the Pistons to Team Up With Cade Cunningham?

A recent report linked Kevin Durant to the Detroit Pistons, and the 16-time NBA All-Star's latest Instagram post is only fueling the rumors.

Kevin Durant’s legendary NBA career is about to enter its 19th season, and he’s widely regarded as one of the best scorers in league history.

The NBA landscape keeps shifting with blockbuster trades and free-agent signings, and while Durant is under contract with the Houston Rockets, a recent report linked him to the Detroit Pistons. Now, the 16-time NBA All-Star is seemingly fueling the rumors with a new Instagram post.

Kevin Durant’s Post Fuels Rumors That He Wants to Join Detroit Pistons

A few days ago, ClutchPoints NBA insider Brett Siegel reported that “Durant has interest in playing alongside Pistons star Cade Cunningham,” and that Detroit is expected to pursue the NBA legend if the Rockets make him available.

“If Durant becomes available in any capacity or the Rockets look at possible trades involving him either now or in the near future, the Pistons are fully expected to be at the front of the line to bid on his services,” he wrote.

The KD-to-Detroit rumors went viral on social media. Shortly after, Durant posted a photo of himself wearing a Detroit hat on Instagram, fueling the rumor mill.

While it could be a coincidence, Durant is known for keeping tabs on social media and being aware of what’s said about him, so this feels intentional.

Last season, Detroit won 60 games and finished as the top-seeded team in the Eastern Conference. What would the Pistons look like with the 12-time All-NBA selection in the lineup?

Without equivocation, employing a 6-foot-11, three-level scorer who shot 41.3% from 3-point range last season would help with spacing. Teams will need to account for Durant (as they always do), either off the dribble or as a catch-and-shoot threat. Most importantly, having a second superstar scoring option would make Cunningham’s life easier.

However, more than one obstacle stands in the way of this potential deal. First, do the Rockets even want to part with Durant? Houston hasn’t shown a willingness to shop him at this point. If they did put him on the block, the Rockets would want a significant return.

Houston could ask for multiple first-round picks and young players. There’s also Durant’s contract, as he is slated to make $43,902,439 next season and $46,097,561 the following year, per Spotrac.

Trading significant draft capital for a player who turns 38 years old this fall and makes in excess of $40 million would be a gamble, but perhaps it’s one that Detroit is worth making.
