‘Need To Come Lay My Verse’ — Kevin Durant Reacts to Heated Debate on Who Is Better Offensively Between Him and Nikola Jokic

Kevin Durant reacts to the KD vs. Nikola Jokić debate with a viral quote after joining the Houston Rockets in a major trade.

The NBA has always been a ground for passionate debates that can ignite even the most casual basketball conversations. From the evergreen Michael Jordan vs. LeBron James discourse to arguments over Magic Johnson versus Stephen Curry’s impact on the point guard position, these discussions fuel the sport’s culture.

When a player like Kevin Durant himself feels compelled to jump into the conversation, you know the debate has reached a boiling point. The latest centers around whether Durant or Nikola Jokić holds the crown as the superior offensive player, and KD wasn’t about to let the discussion unfold without his voice being heard.

Kevin Durant Responds to Nikola Jokić Comparison Debate

The spark came from a recent episode of the “Players Choice” podcast where the panel dove into a heated debate. Some cast members claimed that Jokić is a better offensive player than Durant in his prime. Naturally, that didn’t sit well with KD or his fans.

A snippet of the discussion made its way onto X, and that’s where things got interesting as Durant himself chimed in with a now-viral comment: “I need to come lay my verse on this pod. It would go plat.”

This isn’t the first time KD vs. Jokić has entered the conversation. Back in April, during an episode of FanDuel TV’s “Run It Back” show, former NBA player Danny Green praised Durant as one of the most exceptional talents when he was asked whether Jokić has surpassed Durant.

“No, not yet. And it’s kind of crazy to say it out loud because I feel like we’re disrespecting bigs these days. But he is one of the most unique guys that I’ve ever seen play. I have him above a lot of people that most people don’t have him above,” Green said.

“I think this is a topic in the show, you know, ‘most impressive career.’ It’s him and Steph. I have him above Steph because we’re never going to see a better scorer than him at seven feet,” Green added during the segment.

Comparing 2 Elite Offensive Forces

Looking at Durant during his prime years with the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Golden State Warriors, he was nearly unstoppable. He averaged 27.4 points, seven rebounds, and 3.7 assists with OKC and followed that up with 25.8 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 5.4 assists while shooting 52.4% from the field with the Warriors.

Add in four scoring titles and the 2014 MVP, and you have one of the best scorers ever to play the game. Durant’s game is built on shot creation from anywhere on the court, making him a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses.

Jokić brings a very different flavor to the offensive end. Still in his prime, he averaged 29.6 points, 12.7 rebounds, and 10.2 assists last season. While his game is less about highlight-reel crossovers and more about footwork and vision, his ability to score and control the pace is unmatched in today’s NBA. Unlike Durant, Jokić thrives with size and feel, orchestrating offense through his unique passing ability and basketball IQ.

Despite being 36 years old, Durant still performed at an elite level last season, averaging 26.6 points and helping keep the Phoenix Suns competitive. However, even with his efforts, the team finished a disappointing 36-46. Then came the shocking June 22 trade news that KD is headed to the Houston Rockets in exchange for Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the No. 10 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, and five second-round picks.

What lies ahead for Durant in Houston alongside rising talents like Amen Thompson and Alperen Şengün remains to be seen. The move gives the Rockets a proven superstar to pair with their young core, while Durant gets another opportunity to chase a championship in the final years of his career.
