The NBA trade season is officially underway. The first deal of the offseason came as a shock to many, especially Memphis Grizzlies fans. The Orlando Magic have acquired two-way guard Desmond Bane from the Grizzlies in a blockbuster move.
In return, Memphis received Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony, four unprotected first-round picks, and a 2029 pick swap. NBA insider Shams Charania was the first to report the trade.
While tough for Memphis to swallow, this was a change the roster needed. Bane had become the odd man out after a difficult season. He’s also the first major departure since the team fired head coach Taylor Jenkins in April.
Kevin Durant Reacts to Desmond Bane Trade
The news got reactions from all over the league, including Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant. Amid speculation about his future, KD still made time to weigh in on Bane’s move to Orlando.
Durant reacted to a Magic promo video that showed Bane tossing a basketball and walking away in slow motion. The video quickly made its rounds, and Durant posted a six-word message on X (formerly Twitter) that drew laughs online.

Durant’s response added a lighter tone to what could be a franchise-changing move for the Magic. Bane already seems to be clicking with Orlando head coach Jamahl Mosley, and the front office is excited about what’s next.
Orlando Magic Go All In
In a statement released by team president Jeff Weltman, the Magic made it clear they see Bane as a cornerstone.
“Over his five years in the NBA, Desmond has distinguished himself as one of the elite guards in our league, and we look forward to his shooting, IQ, and wide-ranging skill set in helping our team take a step forward,” Weltman said.

This is one of the boldest trades Orlando has made in years. After a breakout season that saw them reach the playoffs, the Magic are making it clear they want more.
What’s Next for the Memphis Grizzlies?
As for Memphis, Bane may not be the last to leave. Forward Santi Aldama is set to hit free agency and could be moved in a sign-and-trade. Marvin Bagley III and Luke Kennard are also free agents.
The Grizzlies could look at Minnesota’s Nickeil Alexander-Walker as a replacement. He’s expected to be among the top guard options on the market.
Meanwhile, Durant’s future is still in play. He’s been linked to the Houston Rockets, San Antonio Spurs, and Miami Heat, with reports suggesting those are his preferred destinations. Trade season is just getting started, and the next few weeks could bring even more surprises.
