The Philadelphia 76ers are entering a vital stretch of the 2025–26 NBA regular season as they push for playoff positioning.
With the Eastern Conference standings shifting daily, the health of their franchise centerpiece remains the primary concern for fans.

What Is Joel Embiid’s Status for the 76ers vs. Wizards Game?
The basketball world was sent into a brief state of confusion on Wednesday morning when reports surfaced that Joel Embiid would miss the matchup against the Washington Wizards. Ky Carlin of Sixers Wire initially posted that the star center was ruled out due to an illness.
Must be APRIL FOOLS joke???? Played against Miami in the same conditions and I’m planning to play tonight!!! #SweatItOut https://t.co/EAMq2679u2

However, Embiid quickly took to social media to shut down the report, suggesting the timing of the update was quite suspicious given the date.
But what’s interesting is that the Sixers have Embiid listed as out due to an illness tonight. So it’s unclear whether the big man is playing tonight.
As of April 1, 2026, the Sixers are currently sitting in seventh place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 41-34. They are fighting to climb out of the play-in tournament seeds, trailing the sixth spot by a slim margin with only six games remaining after tonight.
Losing Embiid for any amount of time during this closing stretch would be a massive blow to their postseason aspirations. Embiid has been the engine of the team, and his availability is the single most important factor for Philadelphia.
Embiid recently returned to the lineup on March 25 after missing a significant chunk of time due to injury concerns earlier in the year. Since his return, he has looked sharp, though he has clearly been battling through some physical discomfort.
So far this season, he has averaged 26.9 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 3.9 assists. His most recent outing against the Miami Heat on March 30 saw him score 26 points in 34 minutes despite visible signs of an ongoing cold.
The confusion regarding his status for the Wizards game stems from an official team injury update that listed him as unavailable. While the organization often takes a cautious approach with its 7-foot star, Embiid’s public rebuttal suggests he has no intention of sitting out.
He has been vocal about his desire to build chemistry with his teammates, specifically Paul George and Tyrese Maxey, before the high-stakes games of the postseason begin in mid-April.
His presence forces opposing defenses to collapse, opening up scoring lanes for the rest of the roster. Against a Wizards team that is currently 14th in the conference with a 17-58 record, the Sixers need this win to maintain pressure on the teams ranked directly above them.
Head coach Nick Nurse and the training staff have been managing a complex rotation throughout the spring. With the introduction of young talent into the primary rotation and the reintegration of veteran leaders, every game serves as a crucial dress rehearsal.
Embiid’s insistence on playing despite feeling under the weather signals a leadership shift that fans have been eager to see as the franchise looks to finally break through the second-round barrier.
As the clock ticks toward tip-off in Washington, all eyes will be on the Sixers’ warmups to see if the big man is indeed ready to go. While the initial report caused a minor panic among the Philly faithful, the “Process” himself seems determined to make sure the only joke today is the Wizards’ defensive plan.
For a team that has faced numerous hurdles this year, seeing their MVP suit up in April is the best news they could receive.
