Joel Embiid Dismisses Heat’s Zone Defense as ‘Not Tough,’ Blames Loss on 76ers’ Poor Execution

Joel Embiid dismisses the Miami Heat's zone defense as "not tough," though the loss puts the 76ers' playoff seeding at risk.

Joel Embiid shared his take on the Miami Heat’s defense, saying that the Philadelphia 76ers had a few missteps but that he wouldn’t call the opponent’s defense tough. The 76ers were aiming for their fourth win in five games but continued their struggles against the Heat’s zone defense, failing to break through and ultimately falling 119-109 on Monday night.

Embiid, a two-time scoring champion and the 2022-23 MVP, was at his best on the offensive end in the recent game between the Heat and the 76ers on March 30, 2026. He notched 26 points and seven rebounds as the team’s primary scorer and was key during stretches when the 76ers needed him the most.

However, his 10-for-25 shooting from the field, including a missed midrange attempt, didn’t give his team the edge. Still, his three-point play that resulted from a fouled layup tied the score at 101-101.

He also helped his team take a 107-103 lead, but Miami responded with a 14-0 run that ultimately decided the game. The most notable takeaway, however, is that Philadelphia struggled against the Heat’s zone defense, which could prove troublesome for them in the Play-In Tournament.

However, Embiid had a different take on this. He didn’t say the defense was tough; instead, he said the 76ers missed shots and that the opponent’s run naturally affected them.

“It’s not tough at all. Part of the game, once we started driving it, we started getting hit when we wanted. A lot of times we did execute that and also we missed a lot of good shots. That can go one on one, they’re going to go in the zone. So they did that and obviously it affected us,” he said.

Analyzing Joel Embiid’s Performance Against Miami

The game didn’t go well for Embiid at times, as several NBA analysts called him out for flopping. The 32-year-old tried to attack the paint when the clock showed 9:22 in the opening period and attempted to draw contact, falling to the ground despite not making contact with Bam Adebayo, who had his arms up the entire time.

Embiid attempted similar moves twice more, with 7:33 remaining and at the 6:28 mark, adding extra theatrics to suggest that he had been hit by the defender. The Philadelphia 76ers are currently in seventh place and projected to take part in the Play-In Tournament.

After their recent loss to the Miami Heat, their seeding is in jeopardy, and their chances of advancing beyond the play-in are also a major question mark.
