‘Embarrassing,’ ‘He Ain’t Wrong’ — NBA World Has Mixed Reaction As J.B. Bickerstaff Rips Officiating in Pistons-Cavs

J.B. Bickerstaff ripping the officiating in the Pistons vs. Cavaliers series draws mixed reactions and criticism from fans.

Detroit Pistons head coach J.B. Bickerstaff spoke out against the officiating in the team’s series against the Cleveland Cavaliers. His comments sparked an online debate, attracting both supporters and detractors.

The Pistons appeared frustrated, especially following their Game 4 loss to the Cavaliers. If one were to ask Bickerstaff, though, the officiating is partly to blame for how the series has turned out.

NBA Fans Debate J.B. Bickerstaff’s Comments on Officiating

During the postgame press conference following Game 4, Detroit’s head coach admitted that the team did not do enough to help itself.

However, Bickerstaff also called out the referees for the massive difference in free-throw attempts between the two squads.

“It’s unacceptable. Ever since we came to Cleveland, the whistle has changed… What was done out there tonight, it’s frustrating… It’s interesting since Kenny (Atkinson) made his comments, publicly, about us, the whistle’s changed in this series.”

According to Bickerstaff, the Pistons attack the basket regularly, suggesting there’s no reason they should be taking fewer free throws than their opponent.

Some fans were fully behind Bickerstaff, agreeing that the officiating was abysmal.

“He ain’t wrong,” one account posted.

Another person gave a more detailed breakdown of why he agreed with Bickerstaff.

After listing the stats for free-throw attempts between the two teams, they had this to say: “I know the Detroit Pistons starters did not perform well at all in this game but the DRASTIC disparity of free throw attempts in favor of the jump shooting team over the slashing team is unbelievable.”

On the other hand, some people called out Bickerstaff for complaining about the officiating.

“Another day, another team complaining about calls after losing. I mean this is just embarrassing,” one user remarked.

“The recent trend of coaches admitting actual game flaws and what they did wrong for just ‘refs’ and ‘free throws’ is nasty,” another tweeted.

“I do want to say that J.B. is being a baby (which he is, Game One the Pistons had 30 more FTs than the Cavs), but he is right about this one. The NBA’s officiating is such a problem. So subjective, no continuity, nothing makes sense. Pick and choose calls,” Anthony Moeglin posted.

“JB made terrible adjustments, terrible decisions, terrible lineups, kept duren in the game, didn’t challenge. This game isn’t just on the refs it’s on you too,” another account said.

In Game 4, the Pistons took only 12 free throws as a team, well below the Cavs’ 34.

However, these numbers do not tell the full story.

Cleveland’s star duo in the backcourt took the majority of those shots, with Donovan Mitchell and James Harden going 13-of-15 and 9-of-9, respectively.

The disparity in free throws is even more highlighted when looking at the 3-pointers attempted on both sides.

The Cavs attempted a total of 78 shots in the game, with 41 of those coming from behind the arc. Meanwhile, 23 of the 83 Pistons’ attempts came from long range.
