‘Sounds Like Luka (Dončić) Was Blindsided’ – NBA World Reacts to Lakers Star’s Statement After Record-Breaking $12.5 Billion Sale

Luka Dončić's reaction to the Lakers’ ownership shake-up has left the NBA world asking questions about what happened behind the scenes.

Mark Walter selling the Los Angeles Lakers for a valuation north of $12.5 billion was already jaw-dropping news on the morning of Wednesday, August 12. The sale comes one year after Mark Walter bought the franchise for $10 billion, which was a record at the time as well.

Luka Dončić’s Latest Post After the Lakers Sale

Luka Dončić took to X shortly after the news broke. Her acknowledged that he was already accustomed to big changes within the organization and made it clear that his focus remained on returning to the court.

“Being a Laker means everything to me, and I’m excited to get back on the court and bring a championship to LA. I’ve gotten used to big changes over these last few years, but I know that no matter what, there is no limit to the potential of this iconic franchise. I look forward to meeting Josh and Bob so we can get to work building something special in LA together,” Dončić wrote on X.

Just a few minutes later, reactions started pouring in.

The pace of the sale caught nearly everyone in the league off guard, with analysts admitting they never saw it coming. Now, chatter across the NBA is centering on whether Dončić himself only learned about the ownership change around the same time as everyone else.

“Sounds like Luka was blindsided too. He has definitely gone through a lot of change in the past few years. Hopefully things can settle down now for a bit,” one influencer wrote.

One NBA influencer couldn’t hide his surprise, pointing out that Dončić apparently hadn’t even sat down with the incoming owners yet.

“damn so he hasn’t even met them yet this is [expletive] bro,” the influencer said.

Meanwhile, popular Lakers fan account ‘Lakers All Day Everyday’ could barely contain its excitement after seeing Doncic’s post, making a bold prediction.

“He’s retiring a Laker,” posted the account, while also commenting, “I love our leader.” Another user also sent some touching words to the guard. “Club 77 will never be part of the change during your career. We will be there until the wheels falls off,” said the X post.

For a fanbase that’s already lived through LeBron James walking out the door this summer and a billion-dollar ownership swap just twelve months prior, this latest twist feels like almost too much change at once.
