Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum recently reflected on the long journey back from his Achilles tear, which halted his and the Celtics’ postseason last year.
With a return date this season still unknown, Tatum is taking it a step at a time. However, there are signs that he may not be far from a return, which would be an incredible boost to a Celtics team that has defied all odds to be the 2nd seeded team in the Eastern Conference without their leading man.
Jayson Tatum Answers Questions Regarding Potential Return From Injury For Celtics
While talking to the media, Tatum sounded partially frustrated when answering similar questions about his injury, suggesting he was “beating a dead horse.” Celtics beat reporter Bobby Krivitsky posted Tatum’s answers via X:
“I feel like I’m beating a dead horse. I’m just taking it one day at a time. It was something that was very serious, the injury that I had. It’s a long journey. For me, it’s just a lot easier to just take it one day at a time.”

Although he may be getting frustrated answering similar questions about a return date, there are suggestions that he may not be far from suiting up. According to Jay King’s Athletic article, Tatum recently took part in optional 5-on-5 drills with teammates. He was quoted as saying, “There was a little 5 on 5,” during the workout.
Despite this significant step forward, Tatum also made clear that he has not yet returned to full practice, and the timeline remains unclear. Given the seriousness of the injury, the six-time NBA All-Star emphasized that he won’t rush his return until he feels 100 percent, even if it means he misses the entire season.

“It’s tough to go into details of every single thing I do every day,” Tatum said, “But I will say (I’m) just getting acclimated more and doing limited things with some of the guys out there…I know what 100 percent feels like – if and when that time comes, I’ll be ready,” Tatum told The Athletic.
In Tatum’s absence, Jaylen Brown has been utterly sensational, averaging 29.2 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game.
A Tatum return would definitely put the Celtics on top. Tatum’s progress in rehab has prompted discussions about a potential return this year, which is quite remarkable considering a torn Achilles tendon normally means at least missing a full NBA season.
If he is able to reach 100 percent before the playoffs, he could push the Celtics over the top in making it out of the Eastern Conference.
