‘It’s Frustrating – Zach LaVine Makes Upsetting Confession About Kings’ Struggling Start

One of the Kings' former All-Stars sounds off on the team's struggles to start the season.

The Sacramento Kings are one of the most discussed organizations when discussing rebuilds in the near future. The Kings have gotten off to a poor start this season, and one of the team’s former All-Stars Zach LaVine recently spoke out.

What Did Zach LaVine Say About The Kings’ Current Situation

LaVine admitted that he’s unhappy. He said ” It’s frustrating because we’ve got a lot of talented guys on the team – guys that care and are competitive. But it’s something we’ve got to work through. LaVine added ” At least we have time to look at some film and try to fix it. Yeah, I mean, it’s frustrating.”

The Kings have a 3-7 record, and are ranked towards the bottom of the league in multiple key offensive and defensive stats, which symbolizes the general mediocrity at the moment. It’s especially frustrating for the Kings because they have a veteran-laden roster with multiple former All-Stars, as well as a former league MVP in guard Russell Westbrook.

LaVine arrived in Sacramento this past February from the Chicago Bulls as part of a large three team trade that the Kings trade former franchise cornerstone De’Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs. LaVine has an established reputation as one of the league’s elite scorers, and he’s averaging 25.2 points per game this season, while shooting 52.7% from the field and 43.1% from three.

However, he’s also viewed internally as a guy who doesn’t contribute much beyond scoring. He has a plus/minus rating of -12.6 this season and the worst defensive rating of his career so far at 125. He’s playing under the last guaranteed year of the max contract he signed with the Bulls, and has a $48.9 million player option for next season. LaVine has an interesting decision to make in the off-season, as the Kings haven’t really pursued signing him to an extension and could look to trade him if things continue trending downward.

Most NBA insiders believe the Kings essentially being forced to rebuild became inevitable once they traded Fox and fired former two-time Coach of the Year Mike Brown. The future of franchise center Domantas Sabonis is perhaps the most significant decision facing Kings General Manager Scott Perry and the organization.

There are signs this season that perhaps the losing has to impact Sabonis’ performance. The three-time All-Star is currently averaging 15.3 points and 14 rebounds per game while shooting 47.7% from the field and 15.4% from three. However, what has most league insiders alarmed is the change in offensive system.

Sabonis has been the Kings’ offensive conductor since he arrived five seasons ago, but Kings Head Coach Doug Christie and his staff are relying on Sabonis less this season to initiate the offense. As a result, one of the best passing big men in the league is only averaging 3.9 assists per game this season.

Taking the ball out of Sabonis’ hands could be a sign that the Kings will entertain trade offers soon. Sabonis still has two years left on his contract, but it seems unlikely he’ll finish his deal in Sacramento as the losses pile up.

LaVine’s comments only add more fuel to the current uncertainty surrounding the Kings.
