Orlando Magic nearly had the series. A 3-1 lead, a home game to close it out, and a first-round upset of the No. 1 seed firmly in their grasp. Then Cade Cunningham was balling again, the Pistons won two straight, and the Magic now have to go back to Detroit for a Game 7 on Sunday.
The nightmare scenario that everybody warned about has arrived, and the injury news is not making it any easier.
What Is Franz Wagner’s Status For Game 7?
Franz Wagner will not be on the floor tonight, and for Orlando, that is about as brutal a reality as it gets heading into a do-or-die game on the road.

The Magic have officially listed Wagner as out for Game 7 at Little Caesars Arena with a right calf strain. This will be the third straight game he has missed since exiting Game 4 in the third quarter.
Before Game 6, head coach Jamahl Mosley confirmed that Wagner could not participate in the team’s morning shootaround. Wagner was spotted on the bench in Games 5 and 6 wearing a protective boot on his right foot.
Mosley had said before Game 6 that Wagner’s status for a potential Game 7 would depend entirely on how his body responded to treatment over the weekend. Clearly, the response was not positive.
The timing is genuinely cruel when you consider what Wagner meant to this series before the injury. Over the first four games, he averaged 16.8 points and 5.5 rebounds while serving as Orlando’s primary defender on Cunningham.
The numbers tell the whole story. With Wagner guarding him across those four matchups, Cunningham totaled just 17 points on 6-of-24 shooting while committing six turnovers. Then Wagner went down in Game 4.
In Game 5 without him, Cunningham erupted for 45 points on 13-of-23 shooting, a franchise playoff record, and the Pistons have not slowed down since.
Wagner himself tried to stay positive after Game 5, telling reporters that he hoped things would feel better the next day and that his teammates getting the job done was all that mattered.
Now Paolo Banchero has to carry Orlando into the most important game this young franchise has played in years. Banchero has been excellent throughout the series, and Desmond Bane, Jamal Cain, and the rest of Mosley’s rotation will need to collectively fill the enormous gap that Wagner leaves on both ends of the floor.
The Magic have not advanced past the first round since 2010. Wagner has been a centerpiece of this team’s rebuild. And the season may now come down to whether Orlando can win a road Game 7 without him.
