How Long Will Joel Embiid Be Out? Latest Update on 76ers Star’s Appendicitis and Injury Recovery Timeline

Joel Embiid’s sudden health setback raises questions about his return timeline as the 76ers head into a crucial stretch.

The Philadelphia 76ers currently have a 43-36 record. They have just got three games left in the regular season and were lining up for a play-in tournament against the Orlando Magic.

Things were looking great as they geared up for that fight. Then this news drops about Joel Embiid, and fans are left wondering when the 32-year-old player will get back on the court.

When Will Joel Embiid Return?

The 76ers posted an update on their official X account in which they confirmed that Embiid has been diagnosed with appendicitis. According to the team, he is set to undergo surgery this afternoon in Houston.

As of right now, his return timeline is listed as uncertain, which is understandably worrying for fans and the team alike.

People recover from appendicitis surgery at different speeds. For regular folks, it often takes about a month to feel back to normal after the operation. But it really hinges on the type of appendectomy they do (whether it’s open surgery or laparoscopic) and how badly the appendix was inflamed. These days, most are done laparoscopically.

Jeff Stotts of In Street Clothes revealed the average amount of time that NBA players have missed due to appendectomies.

“Appendectomies are relatively uncommon in the NBA but have occurred with players like Grant Hill & OG Anunoby undergoing the procedure,” he wrote. “The average time lost for in-season surgery is ~23 days (10.2 games). Median = 18 days”

When asked about what variables can complicate a player’s recovery, Stotts noted there’s “no statistical difference” in appendectomies performed before 2011 when the laparoscopic approach became the norm. “Biggest outlier is linked to rupture or infection,” he added.

NBA analysts have also weighed in on this matter. One NBA content creator pointed back to 2019, when OG Anunoby, who was playing for the Toronto Raptors at the time, was forced to miss the entire postseason as he was diagnosed with acute appendicitis.

Before this, Embiid was averaging 26.9 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game. This season alone, he has already sat out 44 games due to illness, injury management, an oblique strain, and other issues. He was just starting to find his rhythm again when this hit.

If Embiid does end up missing the Play-In Tournament, the load shifts heavily onto Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe, who are averaging 28.4 and 16.0 points per game, respectively. Both will need to be at their best and carry the team if Philadelphia wants any shot at making a run.
