‘I’m Going to Tell Ya’ll the Truth’ — Former All-Star Gets Real on NBA Relationships After Jaylen Brown-Jayson Tatum Rumors

Jeff Teague drops the truth on Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum's bond, calling them 'work homeboys’ during their historic Celtics run.

Jaylen Brown’s blockbuster trade by the Boston Celtics to the Philadelphia 76ers shook the basketball world more than anyone could have imagined. It came just two seasons after the 5-time All-Star helped lead Boston to its historic 18th championship in 2024, breaking a 16-year title drought.

With the championship secured, Brown and Tatum cemented their place as one of the finest duos in Celtics history.

But beneath the championship run and nine seasons of on-court chemistry, the off-court dynamic between the two superstars was reportedly far from a tight-knit brotherhood. While the dust is still settling on the trade that sent the 29-year-old Finals MVP to a division rival, a former NBA All-Star has weighed in on the Celtics’ golden duo.

Speaking on SiriusXM, ESPN’s Shams Charania recently peeled back the curtain on Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum’s relationship, revealing that an elite on-court partnership does not guarantee a best-friend connection after working hours.

“It is a tale of two different people,” said Charania. “And for the longest time, over the last 9–10 years together, they worked amazingly on the court. On the court, they were great. But over the last year or so, that personal relationship was as close to non-existent as you could have.”

Reacting to the NBA insider’s report on the Club 520 Podcast, the 2021 NBA champion Jeff Teague, who shared a locker room with both players during his stint with the Celtics, addressed the rumors surrounding “The Jays.”

“Don’t nobody be cool with people like that on their team, bro. I’m going to tell y’all the truth, don’t nobody hang with nobody for real, for real, like you might have a couple people that hang, but people be work homeboys,” said Teague.

He added, “I think about all the teammates I was cool with when I was on the team. We had done some of them, “You want to do the p*d?” They like Nah, I ain’t [expletive] with you. I’d be like, damn, I used to what the [expletive], it just ain’t my homeboy.”

While Teague knew the off-court friendship between the duo wasn’t what people assumed, he elaborated that NBA rosters are often like normal corporate offices, where people work together and then go home to be with their families.

By highlighting Brown and Tatum’s contrasting personalities, one introverted and reserved, and the other highly social, Teague argued that some narratives are simply manufactured to fit the scenario.

He said, “It ain’t beef. It’s going to become a rivalry.”

But at the end of the day, the lack of off-court bonding didn’t diminish what this duo achieved on the hardwood. They might not have shared dinners together, but they executed the plan perfectly to raise the team’s 18th championship banner to the rafters.
