Something big is happening in Los Angeles, and it’s not what Lakers fans expected. LeBron James, the face of the franchise for years, might be heading toward the exit door. The 40-year-old superstar finds himself in an unusual position this offseason, with the Lakers making moves that suggest they’re ready to turn the page. Meanwhile, whispers about Luka Dončić becoming the new centerpiece are getting louder daily.

Why Are the Lakers Ready to Move On From LeBron James?
The Los Angeles Lakers have been the talk of the town once again this offseason. Every year, they find themselves involved in plenty of trade rumors involving several players. The 2024-25 campaign is no different, as they were reportedly interested in many other center targets before signing Deandre Ayton.
However, what makes this summer more intriguing is how LeBron James has also been named in trade rumors. Several analysts have pointed out that it’s unusual how the Lakers have not publicly announced his decision to pick up the player option.
Adding to the speculation, ESPN insiders Brian Windhorst and Ramona Shelburne have recently revealed that the Lakers have seemingly shifted from James’ window to another superstar in Los Angeles.
The shock came when the Lakers decided not to offer James another contract. Although he is 40 years old and has shown signs of slowing down, it’s not every day that we see a franchise treat a player of his caliber like this.
Beyond the contract situation, Windhorst and Shelburne have also mentioned that Jeanie Buss and Co. did not inform the four-time NBA champ about the franchise’s $10 billion sale to Mark Walter. The Los Angeles franchise was sold for the highest figure for any sports team in history.
“When the Buss family agreed to sell a majority stake in the franchise to Mark Walter on June 18, Doncic was given a heads-up and notably posted a congratulations on social media afterward. James was not given the same notice and did not post any public acknowledgement afterward,” they wrote.
What Does Luka Dončić’s Role Mean for James’ Future?
The situation becomes more complex when considering how the franchise communicated with Luka Dončić about the historic move. This communication led to the former Dallas Mavericks star’s declaration of support for the new owner, as well as a grateful message to Buss.
Meanwhile, there hasn’t been any official message from James about the sale until now, which clearly indicates that there may be something brewing behind the scenes.

The ESPN insiders also claim that James’s failure to receive a new contract offer is a clear indication of the Lakers’ intention to move on to Dončić as the franchise’s new face. All signs indicate the Lakers want to move on from James by spring 2026.
The legendary veteran has been linked with several teams in case he requests a trade, including the Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers, and San Antonio Spurs. There hasn’t been any information on where he would like to head next, but the expectation is that his time in Los Angeles has come to a shocking end.
