Draymond Green Defends Victor Wembanyama ‘Campaigning’ for 1st MVP: ‘It’s Wemby’s Task to Go Take It From Shai’

Draymond Green supports Victor Wembanyama's aggressive methods to put himself in the 2025-26 NBA MVP discussion.

Victor Wembanyama is taking a different approach to show his 2025-26 MVP candidacy. Draymond Green defended the San Antonio Spurs superstar’s stance on his most recent podcast.

When the media ask players about individual awards during the regular season, many deflect the question, focusing on the collective championship goal. Wembanyama sees it differently. While he still emphasizes the Spurs’ ultimate team goal, he does not shy away from making his case for league MVP. This method differs from other candidates, who do not discuss the award, such as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Nikola Jokić.

Green thinks Wembanyama should absolutely keep making his case for MVP. The four-time champion gave his thoughts on the situation on his podcast, “The Draymond Green Show.”

“You have to in today’s day and age. You can say Shai don’t have to say anything. Shai is the defending champ. He is the reigning MVP, and it’s Wemby’s task to go take it from Shai … I agree with everything Wemby said, but I think he needs a couple more signature moments down the stretch as the voting rounds out, to take that MVP.”

Green agrees with Wembanyama’s method, but he does not think the 22-year-old is the MVP yet. Wembanyama averages 24.5 points, 11.4 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.1 steals, and a whopping 3.1 blocks for the season. Green thinks the Spurs center needs more signature performances.

Wembanyama was certainly up to the task on April 30 when he totaled 41 points, 16 rebounds, four assists, and three blocks in a win over the Chicago Bulls.

Green stays consistent in his defense of players campaigning for individual awards. He believes Gilgeous-Alexander should speak more about his MVP candidacy.

“I don’t think Shai has to say much about it, but I think he’s doing himself a disservice if he don’t. Today’s day and age is driven by media. If you think it does not apply to you, you’re wrong. If you think that does not apply in any way, you’re wrong,” emphasized Green.

The Warriors center believes Gilegeous-Alexander leads the MVP race right now. The 2024-25 MVP averages 31.6 points, 4.4 rebounds, 6.5 assists, and 1.4 steals this season. He is well on his way to scoring at least 30.0 points per game for the fourth consecutive campaign.

Gilgeous-Alexander responded to Wembanyama’s April 30 masterclass with one of his own. The superstar point guard collected 47 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals in an overtime victory against the Detroit Pistons.

The MVP race might just come down to which All-Star has more season-defining moments in the regular season’s final two weeks.
