The Milwaukee Bucks were officially eliminated from playoff contention after a 127-95 blowout loss to the San Antonio Spurs at Fiserv Forum on Saturday. The defeat marked a disappointing end to their postseason hopes.
After the game, head coach Doc Rivers pointed to injuries and roster issues, but his comments quickly went viral and drew strong reactions from analysts and prominent NBA personalities.
Why Doc Rivers’ Postgame Comments Sparked Backlash After the Bucks’ Playoff Elimination
The loss to the Spurs was Milwaukee’s 44th of the season and came during a rough stretch in which the team lost nine of its last 11 games. The 32-point blowout at home only added to the team’s frustration.
Speaking after the game, Doc Rivers explained the reasons behind the season’s struggles and focused on injuries to key players.
“It’s been disappointing, obviously. Since I’ve been here, I haven’t had a healthy stretch and it’s been your key guys. It’s been Giannis. It’s been Dame,” Rivers said.
He continued, “This year, having only one quote-unquote star, every other team has two and three. We needed health. We were thin … All the talk and all that stuff probably didn’t help either.”
As soon as the comments surfaced, NBA analysts and media members reacted online, many questioning his accountability.
Bleacher Report’s Andy Bailey quipped, “Has Doc Rivers ever offered some variation of, ‘It’s on me’?”

Rivers was hired as the Bucks’ head coach on January 26, 2024, but the team has not found a rhythm since his arrival. Injuries have played a big role, especially for Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The Bucks star has played just 36 games this season and missed the Spurs matchup, marking his sixth straight absence. He is currently sidelined with a hyperextended left knee and a bone bruise, making this his lowest games-played season.
Milwaukee’s elimination also ends one of the league’s longest active playoff streaks. The Bucks had made nine straight playoff appearances and had been regular contenders since drafting the Greek Freak.
With nine games still left in the regular season, the focus now shifts to finishing on a positive note. But for now, Rivers’ postgame comments have become the main talking point, as fans continue to debate whether injuries explain the season or if more accountability was needed.
