Former NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho ripped Draymond Green for delivering a backhanded defense of former Golden State Warriors teammate Klay Thompson after his move to the Miami Heat.
Acho argued that Green’s public attempts to temper fan expectations actually insulted Thompson far more than any media critic ever could.
Emmanuel Acho Criticizes Draymond Green Over Backhanded Defense of Klay Thompson
Following four NBA championships with the Warriors and a short two-year stint in Dallas, Thompson’s fresh start with the Heat was billed as one of the summer’s biggest moves.
However, rather than taking hits from traditional sports critics, the sharpest blow to Thompson’s reputation seems to have come directly from his longtime Warriors teammate, Green.

Speaking on his podcast, Green attempted to counter the media narrative to shield his former teammate. The four-time All-Star argued that sports analysts were setting Thompson up for failure by expecting him to play at his peak 2017 level.
“Let’s stop acting like 2017 Klay is going to Miami,” Green insisted, urging fans to look at Thompson’s role the way they viewed Ray Allen’s late-career stint in South Beach.
“Don’t try to build it up like, ‘Oh, man, look what happened’ so that y’all can tear him down when he’s not averaging 20 points a game. That’s what media does, and I don’t like that,” he added.

While Green framed his comments as a protective defense against media cynicism, former NFL linebacker Acho saw it completely differently. He called out Green’s logic, explaining that fans were hyping Thompson out of genuine belief in his talent and not a secret plot to tear him down later.
Taking direct aim at Green’s delivery, Acho didn’t hold back while talking on the Speakeasy show:
“I understand Draymond’s intention, but the execution is so, so, so terrible. Like, Draymond, you dissed Klay Thompson worse than we ever could.”
“Draymond Green just dissed Klay Thompson while trying to protect him… I hated it”

Acho sarcastically mocked how Thompson must have felt listening to his friend’s backhanded defense, sarcastically acting out the five-time All-Star’s perspective:
“Thank you, Dre. Like, set the record straight, bro. Tell ’em my game is weak, bro. Tell ’em I’m washed, bro… Tell ’em I’m a one-dimensional player that’s only a spot-up shooter.”
Green’s attempt to guard Thompson misfired on a national stage.
While his intention was to protect the new Miami Heat star from public pressure, declaring him a diminished version of his former self did far more damage than any analyst could.
Thompson, meanwhile, looks ready to revive his career with the new-look Heat featuring Giannis Antetokounmpo, and has dubbed this next chapter a “redemption season,” eager to prove he remains an elite force on the floor.
