The Dallas Mavericks have long been one of the most well-respected and well-run organizations in the NBA, but recently, that perception has seemingly changed. That was due to the mess that Nico Harrison put the franchise in with the shock Luka Dončić trade, with the team deciding to part ways with the general manager early in the 2025/26 season.
The one positive that Harrison left this franchise with is Cooper Flagg, the generational prospect that the team landed in the 2025 NBA Draft, with many hoping he can follow in the footsteps of Dončić and Dirk Nowitzki as the face of the franchise.
Kevin Love Calls on the Mavericks To Hire Dirk Nowitzki As Their Next General Manager
While the Mavericks have some great minds in the front office, they have yet to replace Harrison in the general manager role. Several candidates have been suggested, from Bob Myers to Grant Hill and even to Rich Paul, but the one that the fans and the front office would both agree upon most is the iconic franchise star, Nowitzki.
That was a major topic of conversation on a recent edition of the “Up and Adams Show” with Kay Adams and special guest, former NBA Champion, Kevin Love. Unsurprisingly, Love threw his full support behind Nowitzki for the role, revealing why the Mavericks legend is perfect for the role.
While Nowitzki already has a role as the special advisor in Dallas, Adams asked Love why his name has been suggested and if he would and/or should take on the role if it was offered.
Love said, “I mean, he has a statue out front. I’m sure he would do a great job.”
Adams followed up by asking him what it is exactly about Nowitzki that would make him a great general manager.
“He just knows the game, but I also think the sweat equity and him being the face of that franchise maybe forever and always,” added Love. “I think that he would do whatever he could to make that place special again. I think he would put a lot of good people in place, Dirk is very smart, he’s a guy who influenced my basketball career probably more than anyone.
So if I’m a betting man, I’m betting on Dirk Nowitzki to do a great job at whatever he does.”
At this point in time, there’s no timeline on when the team will officially replace Harrison, but with potential trades of Anthony Davis, Klay Thompson, and even Kyrie Irving looming, they need someone in that role. Whether or not that’s Nowitzki, only time will tell, but given his ties to the franchise and the city, Love is in the same boat as many when he throws his support behind the Mavericks great.
