The Orlando Magic just acquired Desmond Bane from the Memphis Grizzlies in a blockbuster trade. A new team, a new environment and a new journey might sound exciting, but realistically, there are often troubles with joining a new franchise.
After one of the biggest trades of the summer, Bane has quickly realized that his new team urgently needs a shooting boost. There are many gaps in the Magic’s offensive system, and Bane is hungry to fix them.
Desmond Bane Promises Big Changes for Orlando Magic’s Offense
Everyone in the basketball community agrees that the Magic made one of the boldest moves of the offseason. They acquired Bane from the Grizzlies in a blockbuster trade and sent Cole Anthony, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and four unprotected first-round picks to Memphis.
While the NBA Finals are still underway, teams like the Magic have already shifted into offseason mode, rebuilding for the season ahead. Honestly, this trade feels like something the Magic truly needed. Orlando’s offense has been underperforming for some time, particularly in three-point shooting, something Bane seems to have noticed that right away. He’s already talking like a leader ready to fix what’s broken.
Speaking on “The Old Man and the Three” podcast, Bane shared his excitement about joining Orlando’s young core, which includes Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner and Jalen Suggs.
“I really, I like our group, bro, I really do,” Bane said. “It’s unfortunate that I’m leaving Memphis because we had something going there, I felt like, but I’m walking into a really good situation, good weather. I love the sunshine. I love the water. So it seemed like a good fit.”
The Magic, who finished last in the league in three-point percentage (31.8%) during the 2024–25 season, are counting on Bane to help fix that. When host Tommy Alter pointed out the team’s shooting struggles, Bane didn’t hesitate.
He responded, “We’re going to change that. We’re going to change that quick! 1000%.”

The front office also expressed strong belief in the former Grizzlies star. “Desmond is such a unique player because he is one of the best shooters in the NBA, but he is also a gifted playmaker,” said team president Jeff Weltman.
Orlando’s decision to acquire the Indiana native wasn’t experimental. It was a carefully calculated move, designed to strengthen the roster while keeping their young core intact. Now, it’s up to the Magic to show how well they can balance their new lineup on the court.
