Deron Williams Gives Kobe Bryant Edge Over LeBron James in Era-Defining Scoring Debate

Deron Williams picks Kobe Bryant over LeBron James as a better scorer, adding fresh insight to the long-running NBA debate.

The debate between Kobe Bryant and LeBron James’ scoring prowess has echoed through arenas and timelines for over two decades. Since James entered the NBA, comparisons between the two have never really faded. Now, former All-Star guard Deron Williams has added his perspective shaped by firsthand experience with both players.

Deron Williams Favors Kobe Bryant Over LeBron James as a Go-To Scorer

Speaking on “To The Baha Show,” Williams reflected on the differences between Bryant and James, focusing on their personalities, work ethic, and approach to the game.

“Both of them’s work ethic was crazy. They both worked hard; they’re just different,” Williams said. “Kobe just had that mentality where he’s just on his own, locked in, doing his thing, and LeBron’s more silly, keeping things light, which I think we needed both things.”

Williams explained that while Bryant brought an intense, isolated focus, James balanced that with a more relaxed presence. Still, he emphasized that both players could push their intensity when needed.

“But LeBron can lock in, too,” he added. “But, yeah, I mean, like I said, I’ve been around both of them, obviously, I played with both of them, so yeah, if I’ve got to give the ball to someone to get a bucket, I’m going Kobe.”

Williams’ opinion carries weight given his career. Over 12 NBA seasons, he earned three All-Star selections and two All-NBA honors, building a reputation as a reliable point guard who could deliver in key moments. He also shared the court with both stars, including a brief stint alongside James.

From a statistical standpoint, the comparison between Bryant and James offers two different pictures of scoring greatness. James stands as the league’s all-time leading scorer, with 43,253 career points. He has combined scoring with efficiency, shooting 50.7% from the field, 34.9% from three-point range, and 73.7% from the free-throw line.

Bryant, meanwhile, finished his career with 33,643 points. His shooting percentages of 44.7% from the field and 32.9% from three reflect a different scoring profile. Known for taking difficult, contested shots, especially in isolation and mid-range situations, Bryant often carried a heavy offensive load.

Bryant’s game was built on footwork, shot-making, and the ability to score from any spot on the floor. Whether isolating at the top, working in the post, or attacking off the ball, Bryant’s style made him one of the most skilled scorers of his era. His willingness to take tough shots in high-pressure moments helped define his legacy as a clutch performer.

James, on the other hand, has combined scoring with playmaking at a historic level. His ability to attack in transition, create for teammates, and still maintain high efficiency has allowed him to sustain elite production over a longer prime.

The contrast in styles is part of what keeps the debate alive. Bryant’s scoring often came through difficulty and volume, while James has balanced scoring with efficiency and versatility.
