Following his departure from Los Angeles after eight remarkable seasons, LeBron James will have the opportunity to hand-pick his next destination.
Amid the speculation, NBA insider Marc Stein reports that a contender is willing to acquire Bronny James as well, in an effort to reunite the 22-time All-Star with his son ahead of what could be his final NBA season.

On the Fourth of July, Stein published an article on The Stein Line, revealing inside details on NBA free agency, particularly regarding James, his potential suitors, and overall intel surrounding the legend’s upcoming decision.
“James has been spotted in Northeast Ohio multiple times over the past week, which has only amplified the notion that he is indeed strongly weighing a third stint with the Cavaliers … even though it is completely normal for him to return to his home state in the offseason to reconnect with Akron and thus might just be one of those trips,” Stein wrote.
“Yet there is certainly a growing belief among teams competing for James’ signature that the lure of the 41-year-old playing out his final chapter with the team that drafted him, compared to, say, early favorites Golden State, is looking more and more like the scenario to beat.”

In addition to the Golden State Warriors, the Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers, Denver Nuggets, and Minnesota Timberwolves were all viewed as potential suitors for James. However, in light of Stein’s recent report, a return to Cleveland now appears the most likely outcome.
“The Cavaliers were expected by now to have come to terms on a new deal with James Harden and have likewise been in the mix of teams expressing interest in Jonathan Kuminga. All they’ve actually gone through with so far, though, is agreeing to a minimum deal to re-sign reserve center Thomas Bryant while watching Dean Wade (Philadelphia) and Keon Ellis (Brooklyn) come to terms on new contracts elsewhere.”

One conspiracy whisper making the rounds: They want to make sure that they have open roster spots to be able to trade for the Lakers’ Bronny James in the event that they are able to welcome Dad back as a free agent signee.”
The Cleveland Cavaliers, who selected LeBron James No. 1 overall in the 2003 NBA Draft and are home to the future Hall of Famer, already have a built-in advantage compared to other contenders.
Signaling to James and his camp that they are prepared to acquire his son from the Lakers would take their pursuit to a level that simply no other organization would be willing to match.
In 2025–26, James averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds. Alongside Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley, and James Harden, the Cavaliers would arguably be the Eastern Conference’s most dangerous team heading into next season.
