Charles Barkley is back to delivering headline-grabbing takes on Inside the NBA, and this time he’s made a bold prediction about an Eastern Conference bottom-feeder. While fans may brace for the infamous “Chuck curse,” which most recently seemed to strike the Cleveland Cavaliers, Barkley’s confidence comes from watching the team.

The NBA legend went as far as to guarantee that the long-suffering franchise will snap its nearly decade-long playoff drought by securing a spot in the Play-In Tournament.

Charles Barkley’s Bold Guarantee on an Eastern Conference Bottom-Feeder

On a recent episode of Inside the NBA, Barkley repeatedly guaranteed that the Charlotte Hornets, currently 12th in the Eastern Conference at 18–28, will make the Play-In Tournament. He doubled down on his prediction despite pushback from his co-hosts, telling Ernie Johnson, “Write it down on your little paper,” after Johnson expressed disbelief.

While the Eastern Conference remains wide open, it’s difficult to see Charlotte’s path based solely on the standings, especially given the franchise hasn’t reached the playoffs since the 2015–16 season. However, Barkley’s confidence stems from what the Hornets look like when healthy rather than where they sit in the table.

With LaMelo Ball back, rookie Kon Knueppel continuing his scoring surge, and Brandon Miller finding rhythm, Charlotte has looked more competitive, winning five of its last eight games. That trio has dominated together, offering a glimpse of a lineup that can score with anyone when fully intact.

The turnaround has caught the attention of other analysts as well. Bill Simmons recently labeled the Hornets “must-watch basketball,” pointing to statement wins against top teams, including a 27-point blowout of the Oklahoma City Thunder and an 18-point victory over the Los Angeles Lakers.

Defense remains a work in progress, but optimism is growing in Charlotte. The Hornets sit just 3.5 games behind the 10th-place Atlanta Hawks, while the 11th-place Milwaukee Bucks could stumble further with Giannis Antetokounmpo sidelined once again. That leaves Atlanta and the ninth-place Chicago Bulls (23–22) as the primary obstacles.

Even if the Hawks and Bulls continue to ride recent winning streaks, the Hornets have shown encouraging underlying numbers. Charlotte posts a positive net rating when its starting five shares the floor, a sign this group can remain firmly in the Play-In race if it stays healthy.

It’s also worth noting that Charlotte owns a positive point differential (+0.5), compared to Chicago (-1.8) and Atlanta (-1.3), a subtle but telling indicator that Barkley’s bold guarantee may not be as far-fetched as it initially sounded.
