Celtics Legend Paul Pierce Believes NBA Referees Are ‘Tired’ Of Luka Dončić After $50K Fine

Paul Pierce gave his thoughts on Los Angeles Lakers superstar Luka Dončić's latest controversial interaction with an official.

The NBA fined Luka Dončić $50,000 this week for an inappropriate gesture toward a referee. The Los Angeles Lakers’ superstar frequently complains to officials, but went too far this time. Boston Celtics legend Paul Pierce gave his thoughts on the situation.

Paul Pierce Thinks NBA Officials Cannot Stand Luka Dončić

Dončić received the fine during the Lakers’ battle with the New York Knicks on March 8. He tried to draw a charging foul on Mohamed Diawara in the third quarter, but official Tre Maddox called it a blocking foul. Dončić then responded with a “money-making” gesture with his fingers. Maddox did not issue a technical foul, but the league disciplined Dončić.

Pierce appeared on the “No Fouls Given” podcast and provided his perspective on Dončić’s relationship with NBA officials.

“This is the thing about Luka. He’s developed a relationship with the refs, sort of like certain players around the league that you don’t have. Sometimes you get to the no tolerance, like Rasheed [Wallace], like Draymond. It’s just like you know the refs are tired of Luka Dončić because it’s like after every play there’s some type of gesture,” Pierce expressed.

Dončić’s frustration with referees ultimately hurts his reputation and the team. He has 15 technical fouls this season. If he acquires one more over the final 17 regular-season games, he receives an automatic one-game suspension. The number resets in the playoffs, but the Lakers need Dončić on the floor, especially with LeBron James sidelined.

Los Angeles sits in the No. 4 seed, just two games ahead of the No. 7 seed Phoenix Suns. The Lakers could certainly still fall back into the play-in tournament if they hit a rough patch over the last month of the campaign. Dončić cannot afford to hurt the team with his antics toward officials.

“If it were anybody else, not Luka, at this point, it probably wouldn’t have happened. But since he’s just known to be a guy who’s just constantly on the refs, gestures and all, they’re like, ‘We’ve had enough,'” expressed Pierce.

Dončić leads the league in scoring at 32.5 points per game with 7.9 rebounds, 8.5 assists, and 1.5 steals. He also leads the NBA in free throws per game at 10.2. His height, size, and skill set create mismatches for opposing defenses. The six-time All-Star’s unnecessary antics involving officials cast a negative light on his on-court play. He must let his game do more of the talking to close out the season.

It will be interesting to see if Dončić cuts down his complaining with a possible suspension looming.
