Cade Cunningham Injury Update: Pistons Announce New Development On 2-Time All-Star’s Return Timeline

Pistons share positive update on Cade Cunningham’s recovery, but extended absence could impact his All-NBA chances this season.

Earlier in March, it was stated that “After further testing, Pistons guard Cade Cunningham has been diagnosed with a left lung pneumothorax. Cunningham exited Tuesday’s game vs. the Wizards in the first quarter. He will be re-evaluated in two weeks.”

The announcement quickly drew attention across the league, as Detroit’s All-Star guard had been in the middle of a standout season and playing a key role in the team’s push toward the top of the Eastern Conference.

Cunningham’s injury occurred during a game against the Washington Wizards, where he exited early in the first quarter after diving for a loose ball and colliding with an opponent. Initially reported as back spasms, further evaluation revealed a collapsed left lung. The condition has been described as mild, and he is expected to be re-evaluated in two weeks.

Despite his absence, the Pistons have managed to stay competitive, and there remains optimism that Cunningham could return in time for the start of the playoffs in mid-April. But just as that optimism began to settle in, a new twist hit like a sudden storm on a clear day.

Pistons Get Encouraging Cade Cunningham Update

Just when uncertainty began to cloud Cade Cunningham’s return timeline, the Detroit Pistons have offered a more reassuring update.

In their latest statement, the team shared, “Pistons guard Cade Cunningham continues to progress in his return to play process under the supervision of physicians and Pistons medical and performance staff. He will be re-evaluated in one week.” The update signals steady improvement and suggests that his recovery is moving in the right direction.

This latest development brings a sense of cautious optimism for both the organization and its fans. After concerns surrounding his collapsed lung and the added week of rest, the focus has now shifted toward monitored recovery rather than setbacks.

Injury timelines can vary significantly, as seen with the Pelicans. While Brandon Ingram’s ankle sprain is day-to-day, CJ McCollum’s collapsed lung required a far more cautious approach. McCollum’s case highlights why teams prioritize full recovery in such situations, reinforcing the careful handling of Cunningham’s return.

“Obviously, it’s tough,” coach J.B. Bickerstaff said March 19. “Tough for Cade to go through what he’s going through now. How important he is to the team, how important being with his team is to him.

Doesn’t make it easy. He’s a huge part of what we do from a leadership standpoint, obviously. The talent’s there, but just being around him every single day makes people’s days better, and we’ll miss that on these trips.

“But it’s our responsibility to keep pushing forward, and we know he’s there rooting for us, pulling for us.”

Cunningham is averaging 24.5 points, 9.9 assists, 5.6 rebounds, 1.5 steals, and nearly a block per game this season, leading a Pistons team that sits atop the Eastern Conference at 55-21.

However, with just six games remaining and his absence extended, he will fall short of the NBA’s 65-game requirement for major postseason awards, likely ruling him out of All-NBA consideration despite a standout campaign.
