Breaking down Bronny James' performance in the Lakers' Game 4 letdown against the Rockets.

Bronny James continues to benefit from the Los Angeles Lakers’ backcourt injuries, carving out quality rotation minutes in the team’s first-round Western Conference playoff series against the Houston Rockets.

While LA was thoroughly dismantled in Sunday’s 115-96 Game 4 road loss, the blowout allowed the sophomore guard to log his most playing time yet, providing some highlight-worthy moments from an otherwise forgettable night.

Bronny James Delivers 2nd Straight 5-Point Performance in Lakers’ Game 4 Letdown

With Bronny’s father, Lakers star forward LeBron James, enduring a rare subpar evening, posting just 10 points on 2-for-9 shooting (22.2%) with 8 turnovers, the Lakers were stuck playing from behind for most of the contest.

After improbably building a 3-0 series lead without Luka Dončić (hamstring) and Austin Reaves (oblique), LA felt the star backcourt duo’s absence, as it struggled to generate enough offense, shooting just 5-for-22 from 3-point range (22.7%).

Upon checking in to begin the second quarter, Bronny did his part to bring his team some much-needed energy. The 21-year-old dished out a couple of assists, beginning with a shot clock-beating alley-oop feed to big man Deandre Ayton.

Bronny followed that up by finding veteran forward Rui Hachimura on the perimeter for a triple to cut Houston’s lead to 5 points with 8:13 to go in the first half.

Still, the game ultimately slipped away from LA, with Bronny’s lone baskets coming when the score was already getting out of reach. The 2024 No. 55 pick first drilled a corner 3-pointer to trim the Lakers’ deficit to 19 points late in the third quarter.

He then closed the game in style, crossing up Rockets veteran forward Dorian Finney-Smith near the top of the arc before driving for a contested layup.

Bronny also put his playmaking chops on display once again midway through the final frame, setting up Lakers forward Adou Thiero for an emphatic alley-oop dunk.

While most of these plays had little bearing on the final outcome of the contest, they fueled optimism about the defensive-minded guard’s chances of blossoming into a reliable two-way rotation piece.

Across 15 minutes, Bronny recorded 5 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists, and 1 turnover, shooting 2-for-5 overall (40%), albeit while showing some signs of offensive hesitancy. That marked his second straight 5-point outing after logging his first career postseason points in Friday’s 112-108 overtime Game 3 road victory.

Bronny will look to keep his momentum going during Wednesday’s Game 5 showdown in Los Angeles as the Lakers aim to secure a gentleman’s sweep and advance to Round 2.
