What Happened to Ben Simmons? Breaking Down Why He’s Not in the NBA and the Latest Free-Agency Rumors

Despite being the No. 1 pick in 2016, former Philadelphia 76ers star Ben Simmons is no longer a player in the NBA.

Back in 2016, the Philadelphia 76ers selected Ben Simmons as their No. 1 overall draft pick. Despite various controversies and doubts surrounding the LSU graduate’s draft, Simmons generated enough buzz as a talented rookie.

However, Simmons’ career took an unexpected turn, especially as on-court disappointments seeped into his relationship with the team and NBA fans. And while many continue to see Simmons as a sure-shot NBA talent, the 29-year-old remains a free agent after his last stint with the Los Angeles Clippers in 2025.

What Happened to Ben Simmons? Understanding What Went Wrong With Former All-Star After Popular Philadelphia 76ers Stint

With the 2026 NBA trade deadline nearing, reports are already lining up players that could make for blockbuster moves. Of course, there’s ample chatter on the free agency end as well, especially as the postseason draws closer.

However, Simmons’ name is seldom mentioned.

Previously considered a possible Hall of Famer, Simmons’ career derailed after an unfortunate 2021 playoff performance. The three-time All-Star went viral for passing up on a wide-open layup during the 76ers’ Game 7 against the Atlanta Hawks, resulting in ample discussion around Simmons as a player.

And while he tried to bounce back, Simmons’ game never went back to what it was.

Some even compared him to icons like LeBron James, hoping to see a career that mirrors longevity and consistency.

Rich Paul, who was Simmons’ former agent, stated that while Simmons made it to the NBA, he lacked the drive to achieve more.

“Everything that Ben wanted to happen for Ben happened. He was the No. 1 pick in the draft. He was Rookie of the Year. He was a perennial All-Star. He was All-NBA. He got the max contract,” Paul explained on a podcast appearance.

As per Paul, everyone has two ways to deal with this situation: “Either you love what the game brings you, or you love the game. And when you play this game for so long as a kid, and most kids don’t say, ‘I want to get to the NBA, and I want to be great for 15 years. ‘ No, they dream of making it to the NBA.”

Simmons’ NBA Comeback is Currently on Hold

While fans continue to debate on Simmons’ fall as a star player, the Melbourne-native is currently focused on some other interests. He previously signed up as a new controlling operator of the South Florida Sails of the Sport Fishing Championship (SFC).

As per Simmons, the SFC was the F1 of fishing.

And even though Simmons hasn’t written off an NBA return just yet, he isn’t focused on it just yet.

“I don’t believe it’s just [about] getting on a team,” Simmons told Andscape. “So, if I were to play right now, I think I’d fit right into the NBA just given what I can do. But I want to give everything I can to the game. I don’t think there’s any point in just wasting a spot just to be out there. I think that’s a little selfish. And there are guys that do it now. But that’s what it is, the business.”

Simmons admitted that he was grateful he didn’t need to fight yet. He even highlighted his physical capacity, admitting that he doesn’t think he’s ready to be back just yet. Simmons also revealed that free agency can be frustrating, but all he can do is keep working towards his goal.

Simmons Blames Wrong Rehab For Certain Issues

While free agency was a hurdle for Simmons, he spoke about his injuries and how inadequate rehab only cost him more time and effort.

“The original time we were just approaching a lot of my rehab wrong. And I don’t think it was on the therapist. I just think we had to get a new set of eyes on it. And a lot of it was my mobility and that nerve running through your back, through my leg,” Simmons explained. “I could barely jump off it or really move around.”

Throughout his career, Simmons has been plagued by recurring back and knee issues.

And despite the whole process of working on yourself being exhausting, Simmons also found it rewarding.

As of now, Simmons is looking to make a return in 2026, but isn’t in a rush to get back as soon as possible.

In a career spanning nine years, Simmons has averaged 13.1 points, 7.4 rebounds, 7.2 assists, and 1.5 steals. Apart from the Clippers and 76ers, Simmons has also played for the Brooklyn Nets.
