Bam Adebayo Issues Clear Warning to Erik Spoelstra After Heat HC’s Public Criticism Of Players

Bam Adebayo had a strong response after Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra called out Heat players in a team meeting.

It has been a rollercoaster season for Erik Spoelstra, Bam Adebayo, and the Miami Heat. They experienced a six-game winning streak and a five-game losing streak. Riding this rollercoaster, the Heat entered Saturday night’s game against the Utah Jazz having dropped six of their last nine, setting the stage for a crucial response.

Bam Adebayo Barks Back at Erik Spoelstra

To address recent struggles, Spoelstra held a Saturday team meeting, reportedly calling out Heat players, including Adebayo. Following that morning’s meeting, the Heat stormed past the Jazz with a 147-116 blowout, as Adebayo powered the effort with 26 points and 15 rebounds. After the win, Adebayo shared how the team meeting fueled their performance.

Reporters asked about the meeting at his locker after the game. Adebayo did not hold back.

“You’re definitely clearing the air, clearing the room,” Adebayo said. “But you know, all being said we like when Coach confronts us, he just has to prepared when we bark back. We’re all grown men at the end of the day so if we don’t like what he said we can always have a man to man conversation.”

Adebayo is right that Spoelstra must be ready for players to “bark back.” Spoelstra, a seasoned leader since 2008, guided Miami to six finals and two titles with the big three of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh. His experience with superstar personalities likely prepares him for these moments.

Furthermore, Spoelstra’s tenure as an assistant from 1997 to 2008 brings his experience with the franchise close to 30 years.

It should also help Spoelstra, who is used to trade rumors being about one of the league’s more seemingly active teams for so long. Distractions like that are another hurdle that Spoelstra likely discussed with his squad.

Although Adebayo may not yet be at the superstar level, he remains a standout player and a worthy All-Star candidate. Building on his recent performances, he aims to make his fourth All-Star team this season.

All-Star Game reserves will be announced Sunday, Feb. 1, at 6 p.m. ET on NBC.

Adebayo is having a disappointing season. Averaging 17.8 points and 9.7 rebounds per game, his field goal percentage has dropped to 44.9% from a 53.0% career average. Positively, he’s hitting 35.3% from beyond the arc, up from his 32.7% career average. Fewer easy buckets have contributed to his struggles.

Adebayo has caught fire over the last few games. After a quiet 4-point, 12-rebound night in a blowout loss to Golden State on Monday, he stormed back with scoring bursts of 25, 32, and 26. Thanks to his surge, the Heat have gone 2-1 in that stretch, bringing them back to .500 on their west coast road trip.

The Heat finish their road trip in Phoenix against the Suns on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET, then return home to host the Orlando Magic on Wednesday.
