The Miami Heat faced the Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday, and even though Bam Adebayo never stepped on the court, he still found himself in the crosshairs of the Hornets’ broadcast team.
The Heat star has been the talk of the NBA this month, having surpassed Kobe Bryant’s iconic 81-point game on March 10 to set a new single-game scoring record. With that historic achievement fresh in everyone’s mind, the Hornets’ announcers couldn’t resist taking a jab at Adebayo for sitting out, pointing out the irony of a record-breaking player watching from the sidelines.

Hornets Announcers Roast Bam Adebayo
The Heat missed Adebayo after the Hornets destroyed them on Tuesday with a 136-106 finish. LaMelo Ball’s double-double performance annihilated Miami. Ball added 30 points, 13 assists, six rebounds, and one steal.
While the Hornets were destroying the Heat on Tuesday, Charlotte’s commentators had the audacity to call out Adebayo’s historical feat. Adebayo is now second for the most points scored in a single NBA game after adding 83 points against the Washington Wizards.
Despite the remarkable achievement, the Hornets’ announcers couldn’t help but point out how Adebayo accomplished it.
It started when they noted Adebayo’s absence. They briefly talked about his right calf injury. Then they fired shots at the Heat star, saying it could be a shoulder injury instead, given all the free throws he took to notch 83 points.
“Adebayo, for Miami, not in uniform, they’re calling it right calf tightness,” the Hornets announcer said. “Maybe he has a sore shoulder from shooting all those free throws a week ago.”

Looking back at Adebayo’s legendary accomplishment, it’s no secret that he took 43 free throw attempts. Out of 43 attempts, he drilled 36 free throws. That’s nearly half of Adebayo’s 83 points.
While many seem to be sour about how Adebayo eclipsed Bryant, we can’t discount the fact that he was fouled hard on several occasions, hence his hefty free-throw attempts. The Heat star caught fire, and the Wizards did everything they could to put a stop to him.
Looking at Adebayo’s other numbers, he drilled 20 out of 43 FG attempts and knocked down seven out of 22 3-point shots. While his free throws may have taken up a big chunk of his 83 points, there’s no question that he also put in the work to try to notch the feat without getting to the line.
Adebayo now holds the modern record for the most points scored in a single NBA game.
