‘Have Some F***ing Respect’ — Austin Reaves Goes at Fan for Uncalled-For Shot at Luka Dončić After Lakers Star’s Injury

Austin Reaves comes to Luka Dončić’s defense after a trash-talking Thunder fan targets the Lakers star while he’s down.

Austin Reaves and the Los Angeles Lakers endured a 139-96 beatdown at the hands of the reigning NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder during Thursday’s prime-time road clash.

However, Luka Dončić’s hamstring injury was the bigger storyline, with Reaves taking exception to a Thunder fan disrespecting his Lakers co-star after the demoralizing setback.

Austin Reaves Defends Luka Dončić Against Trash-Talking Thunder Fan

While Thursday’s contest was a lopsided affair from the start, with the Lakers falling behind 44-21 after the first quarter and 82-51 at halftime, JJ Redick kept his top players in the game to keep fighting.

The decision didn’t pay off, as Dončić, who has a history of hamstring troubles, suffered a left hamstring injury with LA down 90-58 early in the third quarter. The six-time All-Star came up hobbling before taking a moment to lie down on the court in devastation.

While many fans were holding their breath as Dončić was tended to on the baseline, one Thunder fan seized an opportunity to kick him while he was down.

“Now you know what it’s like to play defense,” the fan shouted.

Reaves wasn’t having it, though. Without hesitation, the undrafted guard unloaded a series of F-bombs on the inconsiderate onlooker.

“Shut the f**k up. Shut up. He’s f***ing hurt!” Reaves retorted.

“F**k you,” the fan fired back.

“Come on. That’s some bulls**t. He’s down hurt. … Have some f***ing respect,” Reaves continued as security intervened.

Upon being helped up, Dončić headed to the locker room and was promptly ruled out for the remainder of the night. He finished with 12 points, 4 rebounds, 7 assists, and 6 turnovers on 3-for-10 shooting (30%) over 26 minutes as LA sustained its worst loss of the season.

The 27-year-old is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Friday to determine the severity of his injury. Given the amount of pain that Dončić was in on the play, many are expecting him to be diagnosed with a hamstring strain that could sideline him for multiple weeks.

With just five games remaining for LA (50-27) and Dončić having appeared in only 64 contests, his awards eligibility appears in serious jeopardy, given the NBA’s divisive 65-game awards rule.

More importantly, Dončić’s potential prolonged absence could cast doubt on the Lakers’ playoff outlook, as they would likely be hard-pressed to replace his league-leading 33.5 points per game scoring average.

In such a scenario, Reaves would be tasked with increased playmaking and scoring duties, while veteran star forward LeBron James would have to take on a bigger workload after settling into a complementary offensive role.
