Anthony Davis’s NBA career has been a rollercoaster ride. In recent years, he has changed teams from the Los Angeles Lakers to the Dallas Mavericks and now to the Washington Wizards.
In 2023, the Lakers gave Davis a three-year, $186 million deal — the richest annual extension in NBA history at the time — but Davis missed the call from his agent, Rich Paul. In fact, he missed Paul’s call when he received his last two extensions, and he was doing the same thing both times: building LEGO sets.
Anthony Davis Missed Rich Paul’s $186 Million Extension Call While Building LEGO Sets
On the latest episode of TODAY’s “Glass Half Full” with Craig Melvin, Davis spoke about his love of LEGO.
“I build LEGOs,” Davis said. “I have an entire collection of LEGOs. I love to build LEGOs.
“It’s funny because my agent called me my last two extensions, and I wasn’t answering the phone. He was like, ‘Man, you just got paid the highest extension in NBA history, and I can’t get a hold of you.’ [I’m like], ‘I’m sorry, I was building LEGOs. I apologize.”
Davis has had plenty of time to build LEGOs lately, as he missed the majority of the 2025-26 season due to injuries. The 14-year NBA veteran was traded to the Wizards in February, but he has yet to make his Wizards debut as he battled a ligament injury in his left hand.
Davis played in only 20 games this season, averaging 20.4 points, 11.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.7 blocks while shooting 50.6% from the field.
As Davis mentioned, the payday he received from the Lakers was the largest in NBA history at the time. he still has two years remaining on that contract, which will pay him $58.4 million in 2026-27 and then he has a $62.7 million player option in 2027-28.
Davis’ massive contract has only magnified the frustration about his injury woes, as he’s tied for the fifth-highest-paid player in the NBA this season, yet he has barely played due to his injuries. When healthy, there’s no questioning Davis’ two-way impact, but his availability has been spotty as of late.
This isn’t the first time that Davis has talked about his love for LEGOs and how they bring him peace. On “The Backyard Podcast” in 2024, Davis explained that he loves going into his own little world where he’s completely focused on LEGOs.
“My peace … where it’s just like I would listen to music and just be drifted off,” he says, “it’s doing LEGOs.”
