The New York Knicks are under pressure heading into the NBA Playoffs, as they look to make another deep run. Internal and external expectations are high as the team looks to make the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999. A star on the 1999 Finals team and current member of the Knicks’ front office, Allan Houston, recently revealed his thoughts on the team going into the most important games of the season.
Allan Houston Urges Knicks to Block Out Distractions During Playoffs
Speaking to sports site R.org Sports, Houston revealed his Knicks playoff outlook and his advice for the team. Houston said, “I just have the same message for everybody, I don’t really go specifically and share individual conversations with them, but it’s really when they come to me, and it’s really on staying locked in on the moment. It’s really about that, staying connected with your teammates.”
Houston added, “I think that you gotta be able to tune out the noise and tune out distractions, but that’s something they already know. It’s really not a lot that I say that they don’t know. It’s just sometimes they hear different things from different people, but it’s really about staying in the moment, staying connected, and tuning out a lot of the distractions and noise that really is neither here nor there.”

As vice president of player leadership and development, Houston has a front-row seat as the current players strive to take things a step further than the legendary 1999 team. The pressure is on after the organization fired Tom Thibodeau last summer despite the head coach taking the Knicks to the Eastern Conference Finals.
The organization hired former Coach of the Year Mike Brown, and he’s led the Knicks to the third seed in the playoffs in his first year. He overhauled the team’s offense, and they’ve become one of the league’s highest-scoring teams without sacrificing their defensive mentality.

The Knicks’ playoff outlook starts with point guard Jalen Brunson, who has likely wrapped up another All-NBA selection after averaging 26 points per game. Josh Hart, OG Anunoby, and Mikal Bridges are one of the league’s top defensive wing trios. However, the Knicks’ success probably hinges on the play of big man Karl-Anthony Towns.
The six-time All-Star has been called out by the media and his teammates during the regular season, while admitting it took him some time to adjust to Brown’s schemes. As a result, there’s been speculation he could be on the trading block this summer if the Knicks suffer a quick playoff exit.
Houston believes the team is ready to play in June, and Towns’ ability to block out potential distractions is a big part of it.
