‘Is It Too Much Firepower?’ — 16-Year NBA Veteran Raises Unexpected ‘Concern’ About LeBron James’ Fit With Contender

Despite the obvious advantages on paper, one analyst isn't convinced about LeBron James adding a fourth team on his resume.

The LeBron James sweepstakes are finally tightening up. After announcing his decision to move on from the Los Angeles Lakers, his next landing spot hasn’t become clear just yet. But, according to the latest reports, three teams are leading the race.

Alongside potential reunions with the Miami Heat or the Cleveland Cavaliers, the one other team that is garnering serious interest from the four-time NBA champion is the Philadelphia 76ers. But one veteran isn’t sure about his fit with the new-look roster.

LeBron James Might Not Be Ideal for the Philadelphia 76ers

After a first-round upset over the Boston Celtics, the hope for the 76ers is high. While not in the upper echelon of Eastern Conference contenders, the team is hard to summarily dismiss as a threat. As a result, this offseason has been marked with a ton of activity.

The chief move came in the form of replacing Paul George with a younger and less injury-prone Jaylen Brown. Now, the team is bursting with young, athletic stars in Brown, Tyrese Maxey, and VJ Edgecombe.

Add in the looming threat of Joel Embiid if he can avoid injury, and the foundations are clear. That may have informed the rejuvenated push that the organization is making towards James.

From Bob Myers making a recruitment pitch to insider Shams Charania confirming they’re among the top three landing spots, there is a ton of smoke around James moving to Philly.

However, even though the idea might be appealing on paper, a veteran star believes it is not the perfect fit from a basketball standpoint. Al Harrington, who was drafted in the 1996 draft class and spent 16 years in the league, wasn’t thrilled about the four-time MVP joining the 76ers.

During his appearance on “First Things First,” the former Indiana Pacers star could see the allure. “When I think about that team, and you put all those guys, that starting five with Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, LeBron, Embiid, that’s dangerous and it’s scary.”

However, he still had one major worry. “My only concern is, is it too much firepower, right? You bring in Jaylen Brown, who obviously has been one of his own team, right? And you put him in a situation where it’s definitely not his own team.”

Instead, there is no clear-cut hierarchy among Maxey, Embiid, and Brown on the roster already. As a result, adding another superstar in James might lead to a hard time for every player to figure out their spot in the lineup.

Harrington expanded, “I just would need to see it, and I think for people to think that in one season they’ll be able to put it together and win the ultimate goal, I think that is a little unrealistic.” Finally, he jumped to the biggest concern with the collection of talent.

“We also have to always consider health for Embiid and even for LeBron at 42 years old. I don’t think we can expect him to play 65 games a season. So I think the entire season, those guys are going to be in and out of the lineup.”

The concerns from Harrington don’t ring completely hollow. As the talent pool has continued to increase, and teams are becoming deeper than ever, the era of piling on superstars to win titles seems to be long gone.

Adding James to the 76ers might seem ideal on paper as a final hurrah. But the actual product and fit on the court might not be as seamless as people anticipate. Ultimately, that could lead to a disappointing playoff run.

Finally, Harrington concluded his thoughts on James potentially going to the Sixers.”I definitely like that team, especially on paper. But what you’re going to get from it, I’m just not sure.”

As summer continues, James remains the biggest domino still undecided about his next stop. Even at 41, he has the attention of the entire basketball world.

But as an unrestricted free agent for the first time in nearly a decade, the 22-time All-Star holds all the cards on the table. And as fancy as the 76ers might sound on paper, they do present their own challenges for the King.
