10-Time NBA All-Star Challenges Zion Williamson To Join Slam Dunk Contest To Restore His Reputation: ‘This Is Your Time’

A former NBA star urges Zion Williamson to enter the Slam Dunk Contest, arguing it could help the Pelicans star reclaim his reputation and spotlight.

Zion Williamson entered the NBA with sky-high expectations after the New Orleans Pelicans selected him first overall in the 2019 Draft. While injuries have slowed his ascent to superstardom, Williamson still commands attention with his athleticism and highlight-reel dunks.

Now, in an effort to shift the narrative surrounding his career, a 10-time NBA All-Star is challenging the Pelicans star to return to the NBA Slam Dunk Contest, believing it could help Williamson reclaim his reputation and remind fans of his generational talent.

Former NBA Star Urges Zion Williamson to Reclaim the Spotlight Through Slam Dunk Contest

Williamson first captured national attention with his jaw-dropping dunks in high school, becoming a viral sensation long before reaching the NBA. While injuries have slowed his rise at the professional level, Williamson has been relatively healthy this season, and former NBA star Carmelo Anthony believes now is the perfect moment for him to reclaim the spotlight.

“Zion, this is your time to come back and get yourself back to where everybody wanted you to be at,” Anthony said on Tuesday’s episode of NBA Showtime. “You should be in the Slam Dunk Contest. Everybody knows what you can do; you’ve had your following since high school, since middle school, get that following back. Get these kids to look at Zion Williamson again.”

Williamson’s explosive, rim-rocking style once made him one of the most anticipated prospects in recent memory. While he has shown flashes of that same dominance when healthy, the two-time All-Star has played more than 30 games in a season only twice across his seven-year career.

He has appeared in 22 games this season, and as his production continues to trend upward, a Slam Dunk Contest appearance and a potential win could significantly boost his popularity and public perception.

“Sell your sneaker, sell your brand, get out there on the big stage. You are the guy that these kids want to see,” Anthony added.

The NBA’s All-Star Weekend has drawn criticism in recent years, particularly with top stars opting out of the dunk contest. Williamson’s participation would inject much-needed excitement, though questions remain about whether New Orleans would allow it, given his careful health management.

This season, Williamson is averaging 22.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game in 28.7 minutes while shooting an efficient 55.7% from the field. Despite his solid play, the Pelicans (8-30) continue to struggle, currently riding an eight-game losing streak. They’ll look to turn things around when they visit the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday night.
