Mark Martin Believes William Sawalich Found Winning Combination, Driver Calls It ‘Good Easter Blessing’

William Sawalich wins at Rockingham as Mark Martin claims the teen finally found the winning combination for Joe Gibbs Racing.

For Joe Gibbs Racing’s 19-year-old William Sawalich, Saturday’s victory at Rockingham Speedway wasn’t about suddenly becoming fast; it was about everything finally clicking. That’s exactly how NASCAR Hall of Famer Mark Martin saw it.

Sawalich didn’t luck into the win. He took control of the race after a restart, managed clean air, and handled pressure from teammate Brandon Jones over a long final run. It was a complete performance, the kind that suggests more than just a one-off result.

In doing so, the No. 18 driver added his name to a notable list. With the North Carolina Education Lottery 250 win, he became just the fifth driver to score a first-career NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series win at Rockingham, joining names like David Pearson, Ernie Irvan, Ward Burton, and Matt Kenseth.

Mark Martin Praises William Sawalich After Breakthrough Rockingham Win

“I’m happy for William Sawalich,” Martin shared on social media, congratulating the teenager. “He is a better driver than results he has been getting in that 18. They have just not hit on the combination until today.”

It’s a simple observation, but one that carries weight coming from a driver who built a career on consistency and understanding what it takes to win at this level. For much of his young NASCAR career, Sawalich has shown flashes of speed, but not always the results to match.

Saturday was different, marking a milestone for JGR. With Jones finishing second, the team secured its record 46th 1-2 finish in the series, a reflection of both depth and execution on a day when it mattered.

But for Sawalich, the story didn’t end at the checkered flag. In a moment that quickly caught attention, he offered a lighter, more personal take on his breakthrough. Speaking after the race, Sawalich reflected on an offseason meeting that, in hindsight, might have carried a bit of extra meaning.

“When you meet him, you get a blessing,” Sawalich said, referencing a recent encounter with Pope Leo XIV. “So maybe it was a good Easter blessing.”

For young drivers, confidence can be as important as raw speed. While Sawalich had already proven himself in the ARCA ranks, translating that success into NASCAR’s national series hasn’t been straightforward.

That’s why Martin’s comments stand out. At Rockingham, the pieces finally lined up: the car, the strategy, the execution, and the composure under pressure.

With that, Sawalich climbed from 14th to 11th in the points standings, while Justin Allgaier, who finished third, retains the top spot 126 points ahead of NOAPS second-place driver Jesse Love.
